Eagles Best Cardinals to Open Simms-Flowers Classic

Eagles Best Cardinals to Open Simms-Flowers Classic

The No. 25 Emory men's soccer team traveled to Richmond, Virginia for the Simms-Flowers Classic this weekend, kicking off the invitational against Catholic University on Friday evening. The Eagles came away with a convincing 3-1 victory, behind graduate student forward Colton Myers' career-high five-point day which included his second brace in as many games.

The Eagles held the game scoreless through much of the first half before senior forward Alejandro Gomez found the back of the net from just outside of the box for his first goal on the season.

Myers continued his offensive tear, ripping five shots, four of which on target. In the 66th minute, junior center-back Ryan Hayes found Myers in the center of the box, and he did the rest to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Josh Grand swung in a cross for Myers and he deflected the set piece in for another goal in the 69th minute.

The Cardinals chipped away at the Eagles' three goal lead with a goal in the 76th minute, but it proved to be too late for the Cardinals.

Two-time reigning UAA Athlete of the Week, senior goalkeeper Peter Wagner, had another strong showing, registering three saves and just one goal allowed. The Emory backline held the Cardinals to just four shots on goal.

The Eagles advanced to 3-0-2, preserving their undefeated season. Emory men's soccer will be back in action on Sunday as they take on No. 1 Mary Washington at 1:30 PM.
