Men's Soccer Uses Second Half Comeback to Down Brevard, 2-1

Men's Soccer Uses Second Half Comeback to Down Brevard, 2-1

Two second half goals helped the No. 19 ranked Emory men's soccer team erase a one-goal deficit to defeat Brevard College Saturday evening at the WoodPEC in Atlanta.

Senior Alejandro Gomez and sophomore Josh Grand sparked the second half rally to give the Eagles (5-1-2) their fifth win out of the last six games. With the 2-1 defeat, the Tornadoes will leave the Peach state with a 2-5-1 record.

BC started the scoring before most fans settled into their seats, as Ryan Lynch notched fifth goal of the season just 45 seconds into the contest. An endline cross from Colin McCabe found Lynch at the penalty spot where he was able to head it home.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of visitors until the 60th minute when a handball inside the 18 set up a chance for Emory to draw even. Gomez stepped up to the penalty spot and calmly converted his second PK in as many games.

Freshman Lorenzo Avalos nearly pushed the Eagles ahead two minutes later as Grand sent a set piece into the six, finding Avalos who slipped past the defense. However, his shot from close range drilled the crossbar to keep the score at 1-1.

Despite the near goal, the Eagles would not go much longer before finding the go-ahead tally as in the 68th minute Grand put the team ahead with his second goal of the season. Gomez launched a free kick into the middle of the box where classmate Jake Atallah headed it up in the air. Senior Sebastian Rincon also got his head on it following Attallah, redirecting it down towards Grand where he knocked it in.

Emory won the shots battle, 19-11, and had nine corner kicks compared to Brevard's two. The game was physical with 27 fouls called and seven yellow cards issued.

The Eagles look to complete the perfect homestand on Sunday when the team hosts Sewanee in a matinee affair.
