Athletes of the Week

(Feb. 12) Emory University's Alex Fleet recorded two first-place finishes during the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships last weekend.  Fleet became the UAA champion in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, finishing first in both events.  Fleet's times of 52.32 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and 1:52.96 in the 200-yard backstroke are both NCAA provisional qualifying times.  The senior also recorded a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, swimming a time of 1:57.29.  Fleet's performance at the meet helped the Eagles win their ninth-consecutive UAA Championship.


(Feb. 5) Emory University swimmer Jason Cross recorded three personal-best times while competing at the Orange and Blue Classic in Auburn, AL last weekend.  Cross finished the 100-yard freestyle in 47.79 seconds, more than a second better than his previous best time.  Later in the meet, the freshman recorded a time of 53.44 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, another personal best.  Cross also completed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.84, narrowly missing an NCAA provisional qualifying time and recording his third personal best of the meet.


(Jan. 29) Emory University's Keith Diggs recorded two NCAA provisional qualifying times during a dual meet against Transylvania University (Ky.) last weekend.  Diggs began his day by swimming a provisional qualifying time of 16:17.78 and finishing first in the 1650-yard freestyle.  Diggs followed that performance with another first-place finish and provisional qualifying time, recording a 4:07.68 in the 400-yard individual medley.  Diggs' performance helped the Eagles, ranked second in the nation according to collegeswimming.com, finish their season with a 5-4 record in dual meets.


(Jan. 15) Emory University senior Andrew Callam finished first in three events, and second in two others, over the course of two weekend meets.  Against the Division II University of Tampa (Fla.), Callam recorded three first-place finishes, including individual top-finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle (21.77 and 47.58 respectively), and was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:38.50).  Against Division I Georgia Tech, Callam finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.48) and helped Emory's 400-yard medley relay team to a second-place finish (3:31.03).  Callam helped Emory, the second-ranked team in Division III according to collegeswimming.com, to a 1-1 record last weekend, and a 4-4 record overall this season.


(Dec. 4) Competing against mostly Division I teams, Emory University's Tim Newton recorded four top-three finishes at the Miami University (Ohio) Invitational.  Newton finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, setting a school record in the event by swimming a time of 1:40.12.  The senior also recorded a first-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:44.19, the second-fastest time in school history.  In addition, Newton finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 400-yard individual medley.  All together, Newton record four team-best times this season, and scored 125 points for Emory at the meet.  Emory finished fourth out of nine teams at the Miami University Invitational.


(Nov. 20) Emory University's Kevin Yamada recorded two first-place finishes over the course of two dual meets last weekend.  Against the University of Georgia, the ninth-ranked team in Division I, Yamada finished first in the 200-yard individual medley, swimming a season-best 1:57.43.  The freshman finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 59.87.  Yamada recorded another first-place finish against Limestone College (S.C.) and the Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.), swimming a 1:55.60 in the 200-yard backstroke.  Yamada's performance helped the Eagles win two of the team's three match-ups last weekend.    


(Nov. 6) Emory University's Harrison Brown recorded a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, helping the Eagles to a first-place finish at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Brown's time of 1:55.43 is a team-best for Emory this season. The sophomore also recorded a time of 53.03 in the 100-yard butterfly, a season-best for him. Brown's performance helped the Eagles win the meet for the third-straight year.


(Oct. 30) Emory University's Nick Lake took first-place in two events, as the Eagles took on the University of North Carolina Wilmington.  Lake started his day with a dominating performance in the 1000 yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 9:53.75, 11 second faster than the next closest competitor.  The junior swam a 4:47.02 in the 500 yard freestyle, to record his second first-place finish of the meet.  Both times were season-bests for Lake through the first three Emory meets of the 2006-07 season.


(Oct. 23) Emory University swimmer John Petroff was victorious in two events for the Eagles during a dual meet against Davidson College (N.C.). Petroff, competing in his first intercollegiate meet, finished first in the 200 yard butterfly, swimming a time of 1:56.42. The freshman was a member of the first place 400 yard medley relay team as well. Despite Petroff's performance, the Eagles suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 0-1 this season.
