2006-07 Men's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving Team recorded its second-consecutive third-place national finish during the 2006-07 season.  The national finish marks the team's eighth-straight finish in the top-three nationally, as the Eagles registered 23 All-America certificates and 16 All-America honorable mentions.

The Eagles scored 318 points at the NCAA Division III National Championships to claim the third-place finish.  Emory recorded two national runners up, with sophomore Scott Bobo claiming second-place in the 200-yard individual medley, and senior Alex Fleet taking second in the 200-yard backstroke.  The Eagles' relays shined at the meet as well, with the 400-yard medley relay team of Bobo, Thomas Roos, John Petroff, and Andrew Callam taking third in the event, and the 800-yard medley relay team of Randall Scarborough, Tom DiMarco, Tim Newton, and Nick Lake claiming fourth.  In three seasons, Lake has become a nine-time All-American, while Callam, a senior, finished his Emory career as a nine-time All-American as well.  Newton, another senior captain of the Emory team, ended his time as an Eagles with seven All-America honors.

Emory claimed its ninth-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship this season, a title the team has taken home in each of head coach Jon Howell's nine seasons at the team's helm.  Callam swam on the conference champion 200- and 400-yard medley relay teams, along with winning the 100-yard freestyle.  Fleet became the Eagles' only multiple-event champion for individual races, claiming the top spot in the UAA for the 100- and 200-yard backstroke.  Other individual champions include Newton in the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Bruce Milburn in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and Bobo in the 200-yard breaststroke.  For the team's performance during the meet and throughout the season, the Emory coaching staff was named the UAA Men's Swimming and Diving Coaching Staff of the Year.

Emory finished the regular season with a 5-4 record in dual meets, although all four of the losses came to NCAA Division I institutions, including one to a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and the other to a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).  The Eagles finished first against Division III competition at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, and fourth at the Miami Invitational, against mostly Division I schools.  The Eagles scoring throughout the year was led by Scott Bobo (301 points) and Steve Inacker (300 points).

A number of records were broken by Eagles during the 2007 season.  Nick Lake set a new school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 15:37.88 at the National Championship meet.  Also at the National Championship meet, Scott Bobo swam a 2:03.68 in the 200-yard breaststroke and a 1:50.89 in the 200-yard individual medley, both school records as well.  In addition, the Emory 800-yard freestyle relay team recorded a school-record time of 6:45.59 at the National Championships.
