Athletes of the Week

(Mar. 24) Emory University's Keith Diggs won the National Championship in the 400-yard individual medley, while competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships.  Diggs recorded a time of 3:54.80 in the event, breaking his own school record and falling less than a second shy of the Division III record.  The junior also finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, earning all-America honors and setting another school-record time with a mark of 15:33.71.  He rounded out the meet with three all-America honorable mention performances, finishing 10th in the 500-yard  freestyle, ninth as part of the Eagles' 800-yard freestyle relay team, and 11th as part of Emory's 400-yard freestyle relay team.  Diggs helped Emory to a fourth-place finish at the meet, marking the ninth-consecutive season the Eagles have finished in the top-five teams nationally.

(Mar. 24) Emory University senior Nick Lake matched a school record with three individual all-America honors at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.  Lake opened the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, recording a time of 4:29.87 in the preliminaries, the third-fastest time in school history.  He also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley.  Lake was part of Emory's 800-yard freestyle relay team as well, earning a ninth-place finish and an all-America honorable mention.  With the fourth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, the senior became just the fifth Emory men's swimmer to earn an all-America honor in the same event in four different seasons, and his 12 career all-America honors are the fourth-most in school history.  Lake helped the Eagles to a fourth-place national finish at the meet.


(Feb. 25) Emory University's Kevin Yamada took home three individual championships at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship meet.  Yamada finished first in each of the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke, recording an NCAA provisional qualifying time in each event.  The sophomore all-UAA honors as part of Emory's second-place 200-yard medley relay team, which also recorded a provisional qualifying time in the event.   


(Feb. 4) Emory University's John Petroff recorded two top-three finishes while competing in a dual meet against the 15th-ranked team in Division I, the University of North Carolina, and the 3rd-ranked team in Division III, Johns Hopkins University.  Petroff was the top finisher in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 51.38 seconds in the event.  He went on to record an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:54.45 in the 200-yard butterfly, a season-best time for the sophomore.  Despite Petroff's performance, the fourth-ranked Eagles suffered a pair of losses during the weekend, dropping to 6-4 in dual meets during the season.


(Jan. 28) Emory's University's Keith Diggs recorded the Eagles' lone first-place finish while competing against Division I's Georgia Tech.  Diggs finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle, swimming a career-best time of 9:36.25 in the event.  The junior also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing the race in a time of 4:42.29.  Diggs' performance was not enough for the fourth-ranked Eagles, who fell to Georgia Tech 182-91.


(Jan. 21) Emory University's Cary Burke recorded two first-place finishes, and one second-place finish, while competing for the Eagles during a dual meet against Wingate University (N.C.), the 13th-ranked team in Division II.  Burke won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.76 seconds, his second-best time of the season, and the third-best time by an Eagle during the campaign.  The senior was also part of the Eagles' first place 400-yard medley relay and the second place 400-yard freestyle relay team, helping each record the second-fastest time of the year for Emory.  Burke contributed 24 points to the fourth-ranked Eagles' 119-86 victory over Wingate, raising Emory's record to 6-1 in dual meets this season.


(Jan. 14) Emory University's Kevin Yamada led the Eagles with first-place finishes in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke during a dual meet against the University of Tampa (Fla.), a NCAA Division II institution.  The sophomore opened his day with a time of 1:00.36 in the 100-yard breaststroke, followed by a 2:12.00 performance in the 200-yard breaststroke.  He was also part of the Eagles' second place 200-yard medley relay team, which completed the event in a time of 1:37.63.  Yamada was responsible for 22 points during the fourth-ranked Eagles 148-114 loss to the Spartans.


(Dec. 3) Emory University's Keith Diggs recorded four individual NCAA qualifying times while competing at the Miami University Invitational.  Diggs finished third in the 1,650-yard freestyle, recording a time of 15:39.87, good for an automatic qualifying mark.  He followed that performance with a school-record and automatic qualifying time in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing third in the event with a time of 3:57.96.  The junior completed the meet with two additional provisional qualifying times finishing fourth in 500-yard freestyle (4:33.82), and 12th in the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.65).  Diggs helped the third-ranked Eagles to a third-place finish at the meet, while competing mostly against Division I institutions.


Swimmer:
(Nov. 19) Emory University's Randall Scarborough recorded two career-best times, while helping the Eagles to a 127-97 win over Darton College (Ga.).  Scarborough finished first in the 100-yard butterfly, recording a personal-best time of 52.87, just 1.54 seconds shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying time.  The junior registered his second career-best time of the day in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing second in a time of 10:14.37.  The two-time all-American has led the second-ranked Eagles to a 4-0 record in dual meets this season.

Diver:
(Nov. 19) Emory University diver Sam Taft took first place in two events during the Eagles' 127-97 win over Darton College (Ga.).  Taft finished ahead of four other divers in the one-meter dive, as his score of 216.38 was 50 points higher than the next-closest competitor.  The senior also claimed first in the three-meter dive, recording a score of 211.43.  Taft's performance helped the second-ranked Eagles improve to 4-0 in dual meets this season.


(Nov. 12) Emory University's Keith Diggs recorded two NCAA provisional qualifying times at the Emory Fall Invitational.  Diggs finished second in the 400-yard individual medley, and his time of 4:05.03 in the event was good for an NCAA ‘B' cut.  The junior also finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:15.19.  Besides his qualifying times, Diggs was part of the first place 400-yard medley relay and second place 400-yard freestyle relay teams, and finished third in the 200-yard individual medley and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle.  The Eagles are ranked second in Division III this season.


(Nov. 5) Emory University's Mark Bernstein finished first in two events during the Eagles' 114-83 win over the Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.).  Bernstein began his day with a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, recording a time of 9:51.53.  The freshman also was the top finisher in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.97.  Bernstein scored a total of 18 points during the meet to help the Eagles to a 3-0 record in dual meets this season.


(Oct. 29) Matt Spooner finished first in three events during Emory University's dual meet with the University of North Carolina - Wilmington, helping the Eagles to a 176-122 win over the NCAA Division I squad.  Spooner finished first in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, recording times of 54.31 and 1:56.00 respectively.  Both times were the best by an Emory swimmer through three meets this season.  In addition, the freshman was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team, which finished the event in a time of 1:37.56.  Spooner has helped the Eagles to a 2-0 record in dual meets this year, with both wins coming over Division I institutions.


(Oct. 22) Emory University's Keith Diggs recorded first-place finishes in two events, helping the Eagles to a 124-92 victory of Division I Davidson College (N.C.) on Saturday.  Diggs finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:44.86, just over a second shy of his personal-best mark in the event.  The junior was also part of Emory's first place 400-yard medley relay team, which won the event with a time of 3:33.53.  


(Oct. 8) Emory University's Kevin Yamada finished first in four events at the 2007 Blue & Gold Intrasquad meet.  Swimming for the Gold team, the sophomore finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard medley relay.  Yamada scored 38 points during the meet, helping his squad to a 137.5-124.5 victory at the intrasquad event.
