By virtue of being selected to an Academic all-District first team, Lake will be in the running for a spot on the Academic all-America team.

EMORY'S NICK LAKE AWARDED A PRESTIGIOUS NCAA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

(Apr. 29) Nick Lake, of the Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving Team, was awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, based on both his academic and athletic success over his Emory career.

Lake is a 12-time all-American with Emory (the fourth-most in school history), including three individual all-America certificates at the 2008 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.  The senior became just the fifth Emory men's swimmer to earn an all-America honor in the same event in four different seasons, doing so in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Lake, an economics and mathematics major, has compiled a 3.978 grade point average at Emory.  He has made the National Dean's List three times, and is a two-time Academic All-American.

Emory has been awarded 61 postgraduate scholarships over the school's history, and 44 since 2000, more than any other NCAA institution.  The next closest school is Stanford, with 38 during the same time period.  Emory's Swimming and Diving Team has won 19 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships over the past eight years, and six over the last two.

This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and 29 women) represent winter-sports participants who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. EMORY MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING FINISHES FOURTH AT THE DIVISION III NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

(Mar. 22) The Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving team concluded its season on Saturday, finishing in fourth place at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Eagles finished the meet with a total of 261 points, as Emory finished behind first-place Kenyon College (635 points), second-place Johns Hopkins University (330 points) and third-place Denison University (314.5 points).

On the third and final day of competition, Emory looked particularly strong in the 1,650-yard freestyle, as three Eagles earned all-America honors in the event.  Junior Keith Diggs finished second in a school-record time 15:33.71.  He was followed closely by third-place finisher, Emory junior Bruce Milburn (15:35.30), and Emory senior and fourth-place swimmer Nick Lake (15:35.59).  Freshman Mark Bernstein finished 10th, earning an all-America honorable mention in the event.

Bernstein would return to earn his first all-America honor, finishing seventh in the finals of the 200-yard butterfly.  Emory swimmers earning all-America honorable mentions in the event included 10th-place finisher Tom DiMarco and 15th-place finisher John Petroff.

The Eagles would conclude the meet with an 11th-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Randall Scarborough, Diggs, DiMarco, and Cary Burke recorded a finals time of 3:05.07 to earn the honorable mention certificate in the event.

At the end of three days, Emory earned a total of 13 all-America certificates, nine coming in individual events, and one in a relay.  The Eagles added 26 all-America honorable mention certificates to the total, 10 awarded to individuals and one to each member of four different Emory relays.  Diggs' top finish in the 400-yard individual medley proved to be Emory's lone national championship of the meet.

With the all-America honor in the 1,650-yard freestyle, Lake becomes just the fifth Emory men's swimmer to earn an all-America honor in the same event in four different seasons.  He is the first Eagle to accomplish the feat since Brandon Burke (200-yard backstroke from 2003-06), and joins former Eagles Eric Caines and Richard Kinnett as Emory swimmers to earn the honor in the 1,650-yard freestyle.  Lake earned three all-America honors during the meet, the most by an Eagle this season, which matches an Emory best at the National Championships, and gives him 12 all-America certificates over his career, the fourth-most in school history.

This season marked the first time in the last nine years that the Eagles have failed to finish in the top-three at the meet.  The National Championship meet concludes the 2007-08 season for Emory Men's Swimming and Diving.

Senior Nick Lake also earned all-America honors in the 400 individual medley, finishing eighth in the event.  It was the second all-America certificate of the meet for Lake, and the 11th of his Emory career.

Junior Randall Scarborough earned all-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, setting a new school-record time of 1:39.79 in the process.  It marks the first individual all-America certificate of Scarborough's career.

NO. 2 EMORY MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING LOOKS TO CONTINUE SUCCESS IN 2007-08

(Oct. 18) Following its eighth-consecutive top three finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2007, the Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving team, ranked second in the Nation, will look to take another step forward during the 2007-08 campaign.

Despite losing swimmers to graduation who combined for a total of eight All-America certificates at last year's National Championship meet, the Eagles will be bringing back a good portion of their third-place team from last season.

"By the time our swimmers hit their senior years, they tend to be some of the better swimmers on our team and great leaders," said Emory Head Coach Jon Howell, who, along with his assistant coaches, was honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006.  "The way we handle that is for the underclassmen to step up and play new roles on the team."

The Eagles will be returning a key core of upperclassmen, expected to lead the team throughout the season.  Senior Nick Lake, who has nine-career All-America certificates, will return following his team-leading four All-America honor-season in 2007.  In addition, senior Cary Burke and Steve Inacker, each of whom earned an All-America honor last year, will be back and swimming for the Eagles this year.

Scott Bobo, the National runner-up in the 200-yard Individual Medley, will lead a talented core of junior swimmers for the Eagles.  Harrison Brown joined Bobo in the top-eight nationally in the 200-yard IM, also earning All-America honors in the 200-yard butterfly.  Keith Diggs and Randall Scarborough round out this year's junior class, each returning All-Americans.

Sophomores Tom DiMarco and John Petroff will lead their class in their second season with the Eagles, both returning All-Americans.  The Eagles rosters features a nine-member freshman class, expected to make an impact on the team this season.

"It's a group that is pretty seasoned," said Howell.  We have some upperclassmen who have done an outstanding job at the National level.  I also think we have a freshman group that can make an impact in their freshman year."

The Eagles will open the 2007-08 season against Davidson College (N.C.), a Division I institution, at home on October 20th.  Emory will also have dual meets against Division I Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Georgia Tech and The University of North Carolina, before the UAA Championship meet on February 21st and the NCAA Division III National Championships on March 20th.

For the men, Kevin Yamada, swimming for the Gold team, finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard medley relay.  Winning two events each were freshman Dustin Frissell and junior Keith Diggs, each swimming for the blue team, and sophomore Brad Sloan and junior Harrison Brown for the gold team.

Standouts for the women included sophomore Ruth Westby and freshman Liz Horvat.  Westby, a seven-time All-American last season, finished first in four events, including the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.  Competing in her first collegiate meet, Horvat finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, and the 500-yard freestyle.  Junior Sara Hostalet also claimed first in four events, the 200-yard medley relay, the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard freestyle relay.  All three swam for the blue team.

The Eagles' first intercollegiate meet of the season will be held at the Woodruff P.E. Center on October 20th, when the Eagles will host Division I opponent Davidson College (N. Car.).

(Oct. 4) The Emory University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams will begin their 2007-08 season on Friday, as the annual Blue and Goal Intrasquad meet will be held at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

The Emory Men's team will begin the season ranked second in the nation, and will return swimmers who compiled a total of 15 All-American certificates last season.  The Eagles finished third in the nation at last season's NCAA Division III National Championship, and won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship for the ninth-consecutive year.

The Women's team will open the campaign as the top-ranked team in Division III, after finishing third at the National Championship Meet last March.  Returning Emory swimmers combined to win 19 All-American certificates, including sophomores Ruth Westby and Leigh Psaris, who won seven and six, respectively.

The Emory roster will be split for the intrasquad meet, pitting teammate against teammate for the Eagles' opening event of the season.  Emory's first intercollegiate event of the season will be a home dual meet against Davidson College (N. Car.) on Saturday, October 20th at 11:00 AM.
