Athletes of the Week

(Mar. 23) Emory University's Harrison Brown won six all-America honors, including three in individual events, at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.  Brown's best individual finish came in the 200-yard butterfly, where he claimed fifth place with a school-record time of 1:48.50 in the event.  He also set school records with a time of 50.18 seconds for a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, and a time of 1:50.22 for an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.  Brown also set school marks and earned all-America honors as part of the Eagles' 200-yard medley relay team (third place), 200-yard freestyle relay team (fourth place), and 400-yard medley relay team (fourth place).  The senior has now earned nine all-America honors over his career, including five in individual events.  Brown's performance helped the Eagles' to a second-place finish at the Division III Championships.

(Mar. 23) Emory University's Randall Scarborough recorded six all-America performances and one all-America honorable mention, while competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.  Scarborough earned an individual all-America honor with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, recording a time of 48.78 seconds, and set a school record with a time of 44.98 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing 13th overall.  The senior was also a part of Emory's 200-yard freestyle relay (fourth place), 400-yard medley relay (fourth place), 200-yard medley relay (third place), 800-yard freestyle relay (fourth place) and 400-yard freestyle relay (fourth place), all of which earned all-America honors and set program records.  Scarborough finishes his Emory career with 10 all-America honors, the seventh-most in school history.  His performance helped Emory to a second-place finish at the Division III Championships.


(Feb. 23) Emory University's Matt Spooner recorded a NCAA ‘A' cut time in the 400-yard individual medley, while competing at the Emory Last Chance Invitational.  Spooner swam a time of 4:00.39 in the event, the third-fastest time by an Eagle this season.  The sophomore also recorded a time of 2:11.15 in the 200-yard backstroke.


(Feb. 16) Emory University's Tom DiMarco picked up three individual conference championships, while leading the Eagles to victory at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Chicago, IL.  DiMarco began his meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a pool-record and ‘B' cut time of 1:53.07.  The junior then won the UAA Championship in the 200-yard freestyle with a provisional qualifying time of 1:41.79 in the event.  DiMarco rounded out the meet with a win in the 200-yard butterfly on the final day of competition, recording a ‘B' cut mark of 1:52.33.  He was also part of the Eagles' second-place 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-freestyle relay teams. DiMarco's performance helped the Eagles win their 11th-consecutive UAA Championship.


(Feb. 2) Emory University's Mark Bernstein recorded NCAA ‘B' cut times in both events he competed in during the third-ranked Eagles' dual meet against Division I Georgia Tech.  Bernstein recorded the only first-place finish for the Emory men during the meet, winning the 500-yard freestyle in a ‘B' cut time of 4:38.22.  The sophomore also finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 1:53.68. 

(Feb. 2) Emory University diver Patrick Brady recorded NCAA qualifying scores in both the one- and three-meter dives during the third-ranked Eagles' dual meet against Division I Georgia Tech.  Brady finished third in the three-meter dive with a qualifying score of 312.07 in the event.  The freshmen also recorded a qualifying score of 266.77 in the one-meter dive, finishing third in the event.


(Jan. 26) Emory University's Mason White set a pair of pool records at Wingate University during the third-ranked Eagles' dual meet win over the Bulldogs.  White finished first in 100-yard breaststroke with a pool record and provisional qualifying time of 57.71 seconds.  The sophomore also claimed the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke with a pool-record time of 2:09.91.  White helped the Eagles improve to 5-3 on the season with a 130.5-114.5 win over Wingate, ranked 14th in Division II.


(Jan. 19) Emory University freshman Patrick Malone recorded a first-place finish during the Eagles' dual meet victories over Darton College and Limestone College.  Malone finished first in the 200-yard backstroke, recording a season-best time of 1:56.45 in the event.  He also finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming a time of 54.25, another personal-best time.  Malone's performance helped the third-ranked Eagles defeat both Darton and Limestone, raising the squad's record to 4-3 in dual meets this season.


(Jan. 12) Emory University's John Petroff recorded three top-three finishes during the third-ranked Eagles' dual meet against the University of Tampa, ranked 10th in Division II.  Petroff, an all-American in 2008, took first place in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 1:56.24 in the event.  The junior also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (52.46 seconds) and third as part of the Eagles' 200-yard medley relay team (1:38.68).  Despite Petroff's performance, the Eagles dropped a 146-111 decision to the Spartans, falling to 2-3 in dual meets this season.


(Dec. 8) Emory University's Mark Bernstein recorded two NCAA ‘A' cut times and five ‘B' cut marks at the Miami University Invitational. Bernstein finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with an automatic qualifying time and career-best mark of 4:30.26 in the event. The sophomore recorded his second ‘A' cut time of the meet in the preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 1:50.33 in the event. Bernstein was also part of the Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay, which set a school-record and ‘B' cut time of 3:03.50 in the event, good for a fourth-place finish. He went on to record his other provisional qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries, the 200-yard butterfly finals, the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries, and the 500-yard freestyle preliminaries, helping the second-ranked Eagles to a sixth-place finish.

(Dec. 8) Emory University's Mason White set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke while competing at the Miami University Invitational.  White finished first in the event, recording a time of 56.10 seconds, the third-fastest time by a Division III swimmer this season, and good for an NCAA ‘A' cut time.  The sophomore also recorded ‘B' cut times with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.93), and as part of the Eagles' second-place 400-yard medley relay team (3:22.38).  White's performance helped the second-ranked Eagles to a sixth-place finish at the meet.


(Nov. 24) Emory University's Brad Sloan turned in a strong performance during the Eagles' dual meet against the NCAA Division I's University of Georgia.  Sloan finished second in 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 21.63 seconds, the fastest time by an Emory swimmer in the event this season.  The junior was also part of Emory's third-place 200-yard medley relay team, which finished third in a provisional qualifying time of 1:34.05.  Sloan finished the meet with a third-place finish as part of Emory's 200-yard freestyle relay team.


(Nov. 17) Emory University's Keith Diggs recorded four top-five finishes and a pair of NCAA ‘B' cut times while competing at the Emory Fall Invitational.  Diggs claimed first in the 400-yard individual medley finishing with a provisional qualifying time of 4:02.04 in the event.  The senior also finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a provisional qualifying mark of 16:16.66.  Diggs rounded out the meet with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.73) and a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.37).

(Nov. 17) Emory University freshman Bryant Jones became the first Emory freshman to record an NCAA provisional qualifying time this season.  Jones finished in a time of 4:08.36 during his second-place swim in the 400-yard individual medley, good for a NCAA ‘B' cut.  He also recorded a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, and a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.


(Nov. 10) Emory University sophomore Mark Bernstein won two events during the Eagles' dual-meet win over the Savannah College of Art and Design.  Bernstein opened his day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:45.19, the third-fastest time by an Eagle this season.  He later won the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 4:46.75, the fourth-fastest Emory time of the campaign.  Bernstein's performance helped the Eagles pick up a 111-98 victory over SCAD.


(Nov. 3) Emory University's Tom DiMarco recorded a pair of first-place finishes during the Eagles' 148-89 win over Division I Davidson College.  DiMarco finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.45.  He was later part of Emory's winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, which won the event in a time of 3:11.80.  DiMarco also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.77.  He scored a total of 15.75 points during the meet, as the Eagles improved to 1-1 this season.


(Oct. 27) Emory University's Keith Diggs won three events during the Eagles' dual meet loss to the Division I University of North Carolina - Wilmington.  Diggs finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:45.10, the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 4:43.18, and the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:06.01.  The senior's time in the 400 IM was good for an NCAA Division III ‘B' qualifying mark.  Diggs, the 2008 National Champion in the 400 IM, scored 27 points during the Eagles' 153-144 loss to the Seahawks.

(Oct. 27) Emory University's Harrison Brown recorded a NCAA provisional qualifying time during the Eagles' dual meet against the Division I University of North Carolina - Wilmington.   Brown finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in an NCAA ‘B' cut qualifying time of 52.53.  The senior also finished first in the100-yard butterfly, recording a time of 52.00.  Despite Brown's performance, the Eagles fell to the Seahawks 153-144 in their first dual meet of the season.
