Emory University senior Matt Spooner was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimmer of the Year after finishing first in three events and setting a record at the conference championship meet. Spooner won the 400-yard individual medley with a UAA record time of 4:01.08, good for an NCAA ‘B’ cut. He won the 200-yard individual medley as well with an ‘A’ cut time of 1:51.90, just a hundredth of a second shy of the UAA record. Spooner swam the third leg of the Eagles’ 800-yard freestyle relay team, which won the event with a ‘B’ cut time of 6:50.29. He also finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.83. Spooner became the first Eagle to be named UAA Swimmer of the Year since 2000, helping Emory to its 13th-consecutive UAA Championship.
