2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving

2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving

The Emory University men’s swimming and diving team finished among the top-four teams in the nation for the 12th-straight season, placing third at the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships.

The third-place finish was the seventh in the program’s history, and marked the 11th top-three finish for the Emory men’s swimming and diving team.  The Eagles totaled 348.5 points during the meet, finishing behind only first-place Denison University (500.5 points) and second-place Kenyon College (499.5 points).

Junior Patrick Augustyn secured the Eagles’ only individual championship of the meet, winning the National Title in the 200-yard butterfly with a school-record time of 1:46.87.  The championship was the 10th in the history of the program, and first by an Eagle since the 2008 campaign.  Augustyn became the first Eagle to win the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships.

The Emory men totaled 11 all-America finishes in individual events and five in relays, while adding on nine all-America honorable mentions.  Freshman Ross Spock claimed six all-America certificates to lead all Emory swimmers, earning individual recognition in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, in addition to being a part of Emory’s all-American 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relays.  Sophomore Peter O’Brien earned four all-America certificates, while Augustyn, freshman Ryan Bass and junior Sean Ransenberg each added four.

Earlier in the season, the Eagles claimed their 13th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, setting a meet record with 1,981 points scored.  Headlining the meet for Emory was senior Matt Spooner, who was named the sixth UAA Swimmer of the Year in the program’s history after winning the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medleys, the latter with a conference record time.  In addition, junior Daniel Kolb earned Diver of the Year honors after winning both the one-meter and three-meter dives, and Spock became the first Emory men's swimmer to be named Rookie of the Year since 2009, after setting UAA records as part of four relays, and finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle.  Emory’s Alex Kossenkov was named the conference’s Men’s Diving Coach of the Year.  Emory swimmers finished the meet with 10 conference championships in individual events, and five in relays.

The Eagles concluded the regular season with a record of 3-5 in dual meets, while recording first-place finishes at both the Miami University (Ohio) Invitational and the Emory Invitational.  Emory swimmers and divers set eight new school records during the season.

In addition to their success in the pool, the Eagles also received recognition for their academic prowess.  The men’s team ranked second among Division III squads with a 3.52 GPA during the fall semester, earning Scholar all-America recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).  Junior Paul Weinstein was named to the Capital One Academic all-America Third Team and all-District First Team for his academic and athletic performance.
