Emory University seniors Liz Horvat and
Matt Spooner were named the University Athletic
Association (UAA) Swimmers of the Week, while junior Daniel
Kolb earned Diver of the Week honors, after their
performances at the conference championship meet.
Horvat capped off her incredible UAA career with four conference
championships, three conference-record times, and her
second-straight UAA Swimmer of the Year honor at the UAA
Championships. Horvat won the 500-yard freestyle with a
UAA-record and NCAA ‘A’ cut time of 4:52.65. She
also set a conference record in the 400-yard individual medley with
an ‘A’ cut time of 4:18.48. Horvat swam the
anchor leg of the Eagles’ winning 800-yard freestyle relay
team, which set a UAA record with a ‘B’ cut time of
7:33.94. Rounding out the meet, she won the 1,650-yard
freestyle with an ‘A’ cut time of 16:53.88. It
marked the second-consecutive year that Horvat was named the UAA
Swimmer of the Year, as the senior won the 500-yard freestyle,
400-yard individual medley and 1,650-yard freestyle at the UAA
Championships each year of her four-year career.
Spooner was named the UAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year after
finishing first in three events and setting a record at the
conference championship meet. Spooner won the 400-yard
individual medley with a UAA record time of 4:01.08, good for an
NCAA ‘B’ cut. He won the 200-yard individual
medley as well with an ‘A’ cut time of 1:51.90, just a
hundredth of a second shy of the UAA record. Spooner swam the
third leg of the Eagles’ 800-yard freestyle relay team, which
won the event with a ‘B’ cut time of 6:50.29. He
also finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of
1:53.83. Spooner became the first Eagle to be named UAA
Swimmer of the Year since 2000.
Kolb was named the UAA Diver of the Year at the 2011 UAA Swimming
and Diving Championships. Kolb won the three-meter dive on
Friday with a school record and NCAA qualifying score of 506.85,
less than two points shy of the UAA record. On Wednesday, he
won the one-meter dive with school-record scores of 484.45 in the
preliminaries and 476.35 in the finals. Kolb became the first
Eagle to be named the UAA’s Diver of the Year since Mike
Klein in 2006.
Both the Emory men and women claimed their
13th-consecutive UAA Championships this past weekend, as
each squad set meet scoring records.
