Emory’s Weinstein Named to the Capital One Academic all-America Third Team

Emory’s Weinstein Named to the Capital One Academic all-America Third Team

Emory University junior swimmer Paul Weinstein was named to the Capital One Academic all-America at-Large Third Team for his academic and athletic performance during the 2010-11 season.

This was the first Academic all-America honor of Weinstein’s career.  He becomes the 15th Academic all-American in the history of the Emory men’s swimming and diving program, and the first since Keith Diggs during the 2008-09 season.

Weinstein earned all-America honors with a fourth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, the third all-America honor of his career.  He also claimed an all-America honorable mention with a 15th-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.  At the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, the junior claimed the conference championships in both the 1,650 free and 500 free.  The 2009 UAA Rookie of the Year is the school record holder in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:19.78) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:27.89).

Weinstein has a 3.86 grade point average as a business major.  He has been named to the Academic all-District team twice, and claimed CSCAA Scholar all-America and UAA academic honors during his career.

To be eligible for Academic all-America honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  All-Americans are selected from the pool of Academic all-District first team honorees.  Emory nominees represent the "college division," which is composed of NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA schools across the country.

Sports represented on the men’s at-large team include golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
