Emory Swimming & Diving Sweeps Division II Tampa

The Emory University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each earned a dual-meet victory in their first meet of 2011, as the second-ranked men defeated the 14th-ranked NCAA Division II University of Tampa 172 – 73, and the second-ranked women earned a 207.5 – 37.5 win over the 15th-ranked Tampa women.

The Emory women won all 13 events at the meet.  Individually, seniors April Whitley and Liz Horvat and junior Claire Pavlak each won a pair of events, with Whitley claiming the top spot in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes, Horvat finishing first in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, and Pavlak winning the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

Other individual first-place finishers for the women included freshman Jennifer Pak in the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Jacqueline Schneider in the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Laura Manor in the 200-yard butterfly, junior Anne Culpepper in the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Leslie Hackler in the 100-yard butterfly, and freshman Courtney McDermott in the 500-yard freestyle.  In addition, the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay team of Schneider, junior Jennifer Aronoff, senior Morgan Klinzing and freshman Suzanne Lemberg finished first in the event.

The Emory men claimed first place in 10 of the 13 events, including three individual first-place finishes for Peter O’Brien.  The sophomore was the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke, and the 200-yard individual medley. 

Also notching first-place finishes for the Eagles were freshman Ross Spock in the 100-yard backstroke, senior Mackenzie Perry in the 200-yard butterfly, junior Sean Ransenberg in the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Darrell Eacret in the 200-yard backstroke, junior Patrick Augustyn in the 100-yard butterfly, and junior Paul Weinstein in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

With the wins, both the Emory men and women improved to 1-3 in dual meets during the 2010-11 season.  The University of Tampa men dropped to 4-4 on the season with the loss, while the Tampa women fell to 6-2.

The Eagles will return to the pool on Saturday, January 22nd, as the team will play host to Darton College and the Savannah College of Art & Design.
