2011-12 Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2011-12 Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The Emory University men’s swimming and diving team turned in another stellar campaign during the 2011-12 year, finishing third in the Nation at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships for the third-straight season, and claiming the program’s 14th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) title.

The third-place finish at the National Championships marked the team’s 13th-straight top-four finish at the meet, and the 12th top-three finish in the program’s history.  The Eagles scored a total of 342 points at the Division III meet, finishing behind only Denison University and Kenyon College.

The Eagles were paced at the NCAA Championships by senior Patrick Augustyn, who not only repeated as the Division III Champion in the 200-yard butterfly with a school-record time of 1:45.43, but also claimed the National Title in the 100-yard butterfly.  He became the first Emory men’s swimmer to win multiple individual National Championships in a year, and his three career National Championships tie him with former Eagles Chris Radpour and Chris Halstead for the most in the program’s history.

Two Eagles also recorded runner-up finishes in individual events at the NCAA Championships - junior Miller Douglas finished right behind Augustyn in the 200-yard butterfly, while sophomore Ross Spock took second-place in the 100-yard backstroke.  In addition, Emory received second place national finishes from its 200-yard medley relay team of Douglas, junior Peter O’Brien, junior Stephen Czaja and sophomore Ryan Bass, and its 200-yard freestyle relay of Bass, junior Richard Upton, senior Sean Ransenberg and Spock.  In his first year on the team, it was sophomore Jake Stephens who led all Emory swimmers with a total of five all-America certificates at the meet, including individual honors with a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley and an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.  Senior Paul Weinstein finished fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle to claim an all-America honor, becoming just the eighth swimmer in the program’s history to earn all-America honors in the same event for four-consecutive years.  The Eagles totaled 10 all-America finishes in individual events and five in relays, in addition to claiming seven all-America honorable mentions.

In addition to Augustyn’s time in the 200-yard butterfly, a number of Emory records were set during the NCAA Championship meet, including Bass’ time of 20.37 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, Spock’s mark of 48.72 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, and Douglas’ time of 1:49.69 in the 200-yard individual medley.  Emory’s 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.93) and 400-yard medley relay (3:17.55) also set new program high-water marks at the NCAA Championships, while O’Brien’s time of 55.93 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Miami Invitational and senior Daniel Kolb’s score of 359.78 in the three-meter dive (six dives) against Kentucky were also Emory records.

Following the season, Douglas qualified for the Olympic trials in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:02.95 during a long course meet at Auburn University on June 16th.  At the Olympic trials in Omaha, NE, the rising senior finished eighth in his heat and 104th out of 139 competitors with a time of 2:04.88, becoming the first Eagle in the program’s history to participate in the Olympic Trials.

In February, Emory claimed its 14th-straight conference title, winning the UAA Championship with 1,897 points, besting the second-place University of Chicago (1,197 points) and third-place Case Western Reserve University (1,153.5 points).  O’Brien earned UAA Swimmer of the Year honors after winning conference championships in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley, 800-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay.  O’Brien joined Douglas, Czaja and Bass to set a UAA meet record in the 200-yard medley relay, while Douglas also set an individual conference record in the 200-yard butterfly.  Emory swimmers and divers totaled 13 UAA Championships and 28 all-UAA honors at the meet.

During the regular season, Emory’s men finished second out of eight teams at the Miami Invitational and second out of seven teams at the SCAD Invitational.  The Eagles finished their dual-meet season with an overall record of 2-5, with wins coming against the University of Tampa and the Savannah College of Art & Design.

In addition to the numerous athletic honors, and number of Eagles received recognition for their academic achievements during the 2011-12 season.  O’Brien was named to the Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team and All-District First Team, while Weinstein received one of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for his academic and athletic achievements during his career at Emory.
