Emory Swimming & Diving Falls to D-I UNC Wilmington

In the Eagles' first dual meet of the 2011-12 season, the Emory University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both suffered a defeat against the Division I University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The women lost 182-118 to the Seahawks, despite a number of strong individual performances.  Sophomore Sadie Nennig recorded Emory's only two NCAA 'B' cut times during the meet, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.82, and finishing third in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 58.33 seconds.  Emory also received first-place finishes from junior Leslie Hackler in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.97), freshman Megan Beach in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.33), and sophomore Sarah Greene in the three-meter dive (245.17).

Meanwhile, the men suffered a 217-81 loss to UNC Wilmington.  Although the Eagles did not register any first-place finish during the meet, the squad received a pair of individual second-place finishes from junior Peter O'Brien in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.45 seconds) and 400-yard individual medley (4:15.04) and sophomore Jake Stephens in the 100-yard freestyle (47.74 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (51.96 seconds).  Emory also received runner-up finishes from senior Patrick Augustyn in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.24), sophomore Ryan Bass in the 50-yard butterfly (21.95 seconds), senior Daniel Kolb in the three-meter dive (235.58), junior Justin Beegle in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.51) and Stephens, freshman Andrew Dillinger, senior Jared Dubnow and Bass in the 400-yard freestyle (3:10.48).

Both Emory squads dropped to 0-1 on the season with the dual-meet loss.  The Seahawk women improved to 4-1 on the year with the win, while the men raised their record to 2-1.

The competition will only get more difficult for the Eagles next weekend, as Emory will head to Tuscaloosa, AL to face the University of Alabama on Saturday at 1:00 PM.  The Emory women will also be taking on Tulane University at the meet.
