Emory Swimming & Diving Records 18 Qualifying Marks in Losses to Division I Kentucky

In its first home meet of the 2012 calendar year, the Emory University swimming and diving team registered 18 NCAA qualifying marks against the Division I University of Kentucky, despite suffering a 168-132 loss on the women's side, and a 181-119 defeat in the men's portion of the meet.

The top performance of the day for Emory came from Miller Douglas in the 200-yard butterfly, where the junior won the event with a time of 1:50.17, good for an NCAA 'A' cut mark.  Douglas also claimed an individual victory in the 400-yard individual medley, winning the event with a time of 4:04.55.

Senior Patrick Augustyn added a pair of 'B' cut times for the Emory men, winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.64 seconds, and finishing third behind Douglas in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:53.26.  Senior Paul Weinstein contributed with a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:50.41), while junior Peter O'Brien claimed the top-spot in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.42).  The Emory men also received a first-place finish from its 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Jake Stephens, junior Richard Upton, senior Sean Ransenberg and sophomore Ryan Bass, as the quartet won the event with a time of 1:24.60.

It was also a strong day for Emory's divers, as senior Daniel Kolb set a school record in the three-meter dive (six dives) with a score of 359.78, surpassing the previous record of 316.00 set by Chris Radpour in 1989.  Adding an NCAA qualifying score of 335.93 in the event was junior Kolin Smialek, who also recorded a qualifying mark of 293.38 in the one-meter dive.   Emory's women's divers turned in solid performances as well, with sophomore Sarah Greene recording qualifying scores in the one-meter dive (281.40) and three-meter dive (276.53) and sophomore Annabel Enquist adding a qualifying mark in the one-meter dive (256.28).

The Emory women's swimmers were particularly strong in the distance events at the meet, as freshman McKenna Newsum Schoenberg won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.90, and sophomore Courtney McDermott won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.19.  In addition, the Eagles has four NCAA 'B' cut times in the 400-yard individual medley, recorded by sophomore Brooke Woodward (second place, 4:32.07), junior Mia Michalak (third place, 4:33.25), freshman Megan Beach (fourth place, 4:34.71) and freshman Michelle York (fifth place, 4:35.37).

Sophomore Sadie Nennig added a pair of 'B' cut times and first-place finishes, winning the 100-yard backstroke (58.06 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.12), while junior Anna Dobben claimed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a 'B' cut time of 52.15 seconds.  In addition, the Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay of Dobben, junior Ann Wolber, sophomore Ellen Schafer and senior Claire Pavlak won the event with a 'B' cut time of 1:35.70.

Prior to the start of Sunday's meet, Emory paid tribute to the seniors on the swimming and diving team.  Included in the group were Jennifer Aronoff, Anne Culpepper, Rachael Mullen, Claire Pavlak, Emily Reynolds, Eileen Shi, Whitley Taylor, Patrick Augustyn, Joel Dobben, Jared Dubnow, Bryant Jones, Daniel Kolb, Sean Ransenberg, Ben Redpath, Zeke Van Keuren and Paul Weinstein

With the losses, the third-ranked Emory men dropped to 1-4 in dual meets this season, while the top-ranked Emory women dropped to 2-4.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, January 21st with a 4:00 PM dual meet at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
