Eagles Fall to Division I Tigers at Historic Meet at Clemson

Eagles Fall to Division I Tigers at Historic Meet at Clemson

The Emory University men's and women's swimming and diving team had a chance to be a part of history on Saturday, falling to NCAA Division I Clemson University in the last home meet in the 83-year history of the Tigers' program.

The Emory men suffered a 174-121 loss to the Tigers at the meet, while the women dropped a 180-116 decision to Clemson.

However, the scores for the day were overshadowed by the meaning of the meet, with the stands at the McHugh Natatorium packed with fans and alumni for the final dual meet in Clemson history.  The meet also had special meaning for Eagles' head coach Jon Howell, who served as an assistant on the Clemson staff before coming to Emory.

Highlights for the Emory men included a first-place finish for senior Patrick Augustyn in the 200-yard butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 1:51.96, and second-place finishes with 'B' cut times for sophomore Ross Spock in the 100-yard backstroke (51.00 seconds) and junior Peter O'Brien in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.80).

For the women's swimmers, senior Jennifer Aronoff led the way with a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:25.53, and a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 'B' cut time of 1:06.28.

It was a strong day as well for Emory's divers.  For the men, junior Kolin Smialek won the one-meter dive with a score of 278.33, and finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 316.24, both NCAA qualifying marks.  Senior Daniel Kolb added a first-place finish in the three-meter dive, edging Smialek in the event with a qualifying score of 316.65.  On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Greene finished fifth in the one-meter dive with a qualifying score of 265.00.

With the losses, the third-ranked Emory men end their dual meet campaign with a record of 2-6, while the top-ranked Emory women finish the season with a 3-6 mark.  The Eagles will now turn their attention towards championship season, beginning with the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships from February 15th – 18th in Cleveland, Ohio.
