Emory Swimming & Diving Heads to Cleveland in Search of 14th-Straight UAA Championships

The championship season will kick off the week for the Emory University swimming and diving teams, as the top-ranked women and third-ranked men will head to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio for the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships.

The meet will open with the women's one-meter dive on Wednesday, February 15th with the preliminaries at 1:00 PM, followed by the finals at 3:00 PM.  Diving preliminaries and finals will continue on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, starting at the same times daily.

Swimming preliminaries and finals will be start daily at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, respectively, starting on Thursday, February 16th and continuing at the same times each day until the team champions are crowned on Saturday, February 18th.

The meet will be split between two venues, with the swimming events being held at the Veale Natatorium on the Case Western Reserve University campus, and the diving events taking place at the William H. Johnson Natatorium on the John Carroll University campus.

Both the Emory men and women will be looking for their 14th-consecutive UAA Championships, a streak dating back to the 1998-99 season.  The 13-straight conference championships represent all of the UAA Titles in the history of the men's program, while the women have won 19 UAA Championships in the previous 24 years of the conference's history.

The men's portion of the meet could prove to be competitive, with all seven team ranked among the top-21 squads in Division III. Besides the third-ranked Eagles, the University of Chicago is ranked 12th, followed by 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University, 15th-ranked Washington University (Mo.), 16th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 20th-ranked New York University and the 21st-ranked University of Rochester.

Among the returning individual UAA Champions from last season for Emory are senior Daniel Kolb (one- and three-meter dives), sophomore Ryan Bass (50 free), senior Sean Ransenberg (200 free), senior Paul Weinstein (500 free and 1,650 free), sophomore Darrell Eachret (200 back), and junior Peter O'Brien (200 breast).  Entering this year's meet, the Eagles' currently feature the UAA's top 200 free, 200 medley and 400 free relays.  The Eagles also have the top individual swimmers this year in the 50 free (Bass, 20.57 seconds), 100 free (sophomore Jake Stephens, 45.35 seconds), 200 free (Stephens, 1:40.57), 100 breast (O'Brien, 55.93 seconds), 200 breast (O'Brien, 2:00.79), 100 fly (senior Patrick Augustyn, 48.60 seconds), 200 fly (Augustyn, 1:47.04), 200 IM (O'Brien, 1:50.25), and 400 IM (Stephens, 3:57.42).

Six of the seven UAA teams on the women's side are currently nationally ranked, including top-ranked Emory, ninth-ranked Chicago, 13th-ranked Washington, 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 18th-ranked Rochester and 21st-ranked NYU.

For Emory's women, returning UAA Champions from the 2011 meet include senior Claire Pavlak (50 and 100 free), sophomore Jennifer Pak (200 free), sophomore Laura Manor (200 fly), and junior Jacqueline Schneider (200 back).  The Eagles will enter the meet with the top-ranked 200 free, 200 medley, 400 free and 400 medley relay teams in the UAA this season.  Emory will also has the top individuals in the UAA this season in the 50 free (Pavlak, 23.17 seconds), 100 free (junior Renee Rosenkranz, 50.70 seconds), 200 free (senior Whitley Taylor, 1:50.99), 500 free (sophomore Courtney McDermott, 4:54.45), 1,650 free (freshman McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg, 17:13.14), 100 back (sophomore Sadie Nennig, 55.24 seconds), 200 back (Nennig, 1:59.00), 100 breast (senior Jennifer Aronoff, 1:04.37), 200 breast (freshman Megan Beach, 2:20.45), 100 fly (junior Leslie Hackler, 56.74 seconds), 200 fly (freshman Michelle York, 2:05.14), 200 IM (Nennig, 2:03.81), 400 IM (sophomore Brooke Woodward, 4:22.53) and the one-meter dive (sophomore Sarah Greene, 281.40 – six dives).
