Culpepper, Kolb, Pavlak & Weinstein Win NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Culpepper, Kolb, Pavlak & Weinstein Win NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Seniors Anne Culpepper, Daniel Kolb, Claire Pavlak and Paul Weinstein of the Emory University Swimming and Diving Team have each been awarded one of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, based on their achievements both in and out of the pool during their time with the program.

Each of the four winners will receive a one-time $7,500 scholarship, to be used for postgraduate study within three years.  Emory's four winners were the most by any NCAA school during the winter season.

Culpepper (Warner Robins, GA/Warner Robins), a two-time National Champion and school-record holder in the 200-yard backstroke and 2011 National Champion in the 400-yard freestyle relay, recently capped off her Emory career with fourth-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, and a second-place finish as part of the Eagles' 800-yard freestyle relay team at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships.  She finished her Emory career with a total of 15 all-America certificates.  With a 3.85 grade point average as an English and Economics double-major, Culpepper was also named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team in 2011.

Kolb (Carlsbad, CA/Santa Fe Christian) became the first diver in the program's history to win an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.  He was named the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Diver of the Year after winning both the one-meter and three-meter dives at the conference championships, later qualifying for an appearance at the NCAA Championships.  Kolb has earned five all-UAA honors over his career, and is the school-record holder in the three-meter dive (six dives).  The Business and Mathematics dual major has a 3.83 grade point average at Emory.

Pavlak (Rocky River, OH/Hathaway Brown) is Emory's all-time leader with nine career National Championships (four more than any other swimmer in the program's history), including titles as part of the Eagles'200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay at the 2012 NCAA Championships.  She totaled six all-America certificates at this year's national-championship meet, giving her 20 for her career, the second-most in school history.  Pavlak is the national-record holder in the 200-yard freestyle relay, in addition to possessing school records in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 400-yard medley relay.  Academically, she has compiled a 3.71 grade point average at Emory, while majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Global Health.  Pavlak has also been a CSCAA Scholar All-American and an Academic all-UAA honoree, in addition to being named to the Dean's List on four occasions.

Weinstein (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) has earned all-America honors in the 1,650-yard freestyle during each of his four seasons on the team, including a fifth-place finish at this year's NCAA Division III Championships.  He is the current school record holder in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:27.89) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:19.78).  He has also succeeded on the conference level, claiming two conference championships and seven all-UAA honors over his career, in addition to being named the UAA Rookie of the Year in 2009.  As a Business major, Weinstein has accumulated a 3.75 grade point average, and was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team in 2011.

Culpepper and Pavlak have helped the Eagles to three-straight NCAA Division III Championships, while Weinstein and Kolb have led the men's squad to a second-place finish in 2009, and back-to-back third-place finishes in 2010 and 2011.  Both the Emory men's and women's teams have won the UAA Championship in each of the last four years.

Emory has now been awarded 74 postgraduate scholarships over the school's history, and its 57 since 2000 are more than any other NCAA institution except Stanford University.  Emory's swimming and diving team has seen 33 of its members win the scholarship, including 16 winners over the last six years.  Since 2000, the men's and women's swimming and diving programs have garnered 29 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and 29 women) represent winter-sports participants from all NCAA divisions, who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
