2012-13 Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2012-13 Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving Team recorded its 14th-consecutive top-five finish at the NCAA Division III Championships and won its 15th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, highlighting an extremely successful 2012-13 campaign.

Led by senior co-captain Miller Douglas' National Championship in the 200-yard butterfly, the Eagles compiled 280 points at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships to finish fifth in the team standings.  Emory has now finished among the top-five teams at the NCAA Championships each of the last 14 years, and in the top-10 for 15-straight seasons and 16-times overall in the program's history.  During the course of the meet, program records were set in four individual events and three relays.

Douglas became the second-straight Emory swimmer to win the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Division III Championships, and claimed the 13th individual NCAA Championship in the program's history.  He added individual all-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, and set school records with a time of 1:28.92 and a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, along with junior Ross Spock, senior Peter O'Brien, and junior Ryan Bass, and a time of 3:17.28 and a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay with Spock, O'Brien and junior Jake Stephens.  Douglas also earned an all-America honor with a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay along with Stephens, senior Jeff Simpson and Spock, capping off his two-year Emory career with 10 all-America honors.

O'Brien ended his Emory career with 12 career all-America honors, the fifth-most in the program's history, including three at the 2013 NCAA Championships.  In addition to setting school records as a part of both medley relays, O'Brien broke the program-best mark in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing fifth in a time of 1:49.38.

Spock added five all-America honors during the meet for the Eagles, including an individual certificate in the 100-yard backstroke with a sixth-place finish in a school-record time of 48.67 seconds.  He also joined Bass, senior Richard Upton, and Stephens on the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which finished third at the NCAA Championships in a school-record time of 1:20.29.  Spock now has 15 career all-America honors after three years on the team, and will enter his senior season two shy of the all-time school record of 17, held by former Eagle Justin Hake.

Emory also received school record-setting performances during the NCAA Championships from Bass in the 50-yard freestyle (20.25 seconds) and freshman Andrew Wilson in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.44 seconds).  Wilson earned individual all-America honors with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, while sophomore Hayden Baker claimed a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Eagles won the 2013 UAA Championship, hosted by the University of Chicago, scoring 1,818.5 points, over 500 more than second-place Carnegie Mellon University.  Emory totaled five individual and five relay championships during the meet, and accumulated 23 all-UAA honors.  Wilson was named the conference's Rookie of the Year, after winning the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke, in addition to being a part of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relays.  Spock added five individual UAA Championships, including an individual title in the 100-yard backstroke, and totaled a team-high six all-UAA honors.

The Eagles finished their strong dual meet schedule with an overall record of 1-6, with all six losses coming to higher-division opponents, including ACC programs in Florida State and Georgia Tech, and SEC school Georgia.  Emory picked up its lone dual-meet win against the Savannah College of Art and Design, a 146-105 victory at home on 'Senior Day.'  In championship-style meets during the year, Emory finished first out of nine teams at the Miami Invitational, fourth out of six teams at the Georgia Tech Invitational, and first out of seven teams at the Midwest Invitational.

A number of Emory swimmers received recognition for their efforts in the classroom, as well as in the pool.  Seniors Justin Beegle, Miller Douglas and Peter O'Brien were each awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, following the 2012-13 season.  Douglas and O'Brien were also each named Capital One Academic All-Americans, with Douglas earning a first team berth, and O'Brien a spot on the second team, while Richard Upton was selected to the Academic All-District squad.
