The Emory University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams each picked up their first dual-meet victories of the 2013-14 campaign on Saturday afternoon, as both the Eagles' men's and women's squads earned wins against Birmingham-Southern at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Competing in their first home intercollegiate meet of the 2013-14 season, the Emory men defeated the Panthers 135-106, while the Emory women earned a 150-93 win over their counterparts from Birmingham-Southern.  Both Emory squads improved to 1-1 for the season, while the Panthers' men's team dropped to 0-2, and the women to 1-2.

The meet also marked 'Family Weekend' for the Eagles, with a large contingent of parents and fans in the stands to cheer the squad on at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center.

The Emory women claimed wins in each of the 15 events at the meet, en route to the victory.  Junior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg continued her hot start to the season, winning another three individual events and recording an NCAA 'B' cut time.  Her provisional qualifying time came in the 200-yard butterfly, which she won with a mark of 2:07.97.  She added first-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.74) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.52 seconds).

Freshman Annelise Kowalsky added a pair of wins in individual events, finishing first in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.32) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.69), while senior Sarah Greene swept the diving events with scores of 275.78 in the three-meter dive and 276.98 in the one-meter dive.

Other Emory women winning individual events on Saturday included sophomore Ellie Thompson in the 100-yard backstroke (58.34 seconds), freshman Marissa Bergh in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:53.11), freshman Claire Liu in the 50-yard freestyle (24.44 seconds), junior Nancy Larson in the 100-yard freestyle (52.85 seconds), sophomore Mikayla Carnley in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.57), senior Courtney McDermott in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.00) and senior Kylie McKenzie in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.65).

The Emory women also received a first-place finish from the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Liu, sophomore MacKenzie Brosnahan, Thompson and Kowalsky, which won the event with a time of 1:37.91.

Senior Ross Spock would pace the Emory men, who claimed wins in 11 of the 15 events against the Panthers on Saturday.  Spock finished first in two individual events, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.99 seconds and the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.30, while also swimming the anchor leg of the Eagles' winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:24.74), along with junior David Zander, sophomore Matt Kuhlik, and senior Jake Stephens.

Two other Eagles, brothers Hayden Baker and Christian Baker, would each add on a pair of event wins to the Eagles' total.  Hayden claimed wins in both the 100-yard butterfly (51.64 seconds) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.24), while Christian earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke (54.08 seconds) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.37).   Other first-place finishers for Emory included sophomore Andrew Wilson in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.85 seconds, .04 seconds off the NCAA 'B' cut time), sophomore Matt Wu in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:58.89, a career best), Stephens in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.60) and senior Ryan Bass in the 100-yard freestyle (47.57 seconds).

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, November 8^th at 4:00 PM, when Emory will host the Savannah College of Art & Design at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
