Emory Sweeps UAA Swimming & Diving Championships for 17th-Consecutive Year

Emory University swept the team titles at the 2015 University Athletic Association on Saturday night, with both the men's and women's squads finishing first at the conference championships, hosted by Emory at the Woodruff Physical Education Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The women finished with 2,076.5 points, the third-most ever scored by a team in the history of the meet.  The Eagles finishing 729 points better than second-place Washington University, which tallied 1,347.5 points.  Chicago finished in third with a score of 1,184, followed by New York University (1,129.5), Carnegie Mellon University (1,031), the University of Rochester (806.5), Case Western Reserve University (594) and Brandeis University (293).

After Emory and Chicago entered the final day in a tie for first, the Eagles ended with the final advantage, totaling 1,551 points during the meet, with Chicago taking second-place with 1,408 points.  New York University took third with 1,374 points, followed by Washington (1,296), Carnegie Mellon (1,001), Case (794), Rochester (669) and Brandeis (391).

It marked the 23rd overall conference title for the Emory women, and the 17th overall for the men.

In addition, a number of Eagles won individual awards on Saturday night.  Junior Andrew Wilson and senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg were selected as the UAA Men's and Women's Swimmer of the Year, respectively, while freshman Julia Wawer was named the UAA Women's Rookie of the Year.  In addition, Head Coach Jon Howell and assistants Cindy Fontana, Chris Marshall, John Petroff and Miller Douglas were named the UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for the second-straight year and eighth time in the program's history.

Wilson, who won and set new conference records in the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke during the meet, became the eighth men's swimmer in the program's history to win the award, and the first since Peter O'Brien in 2012.  Newsum-Schoenberg, who set records in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, in addition to winning the 1,650-yard freestyle, was the sixth-straight Emory woman to win the honor, and the 16th person overall.  Wawer became the 10th Emory swimmer to win the women's Rookie of the Year award, after she won the 200-yard freestyle in a UAA record time, and finished third in the 500-yard freestyle.

The other award winners were Drew Hamilton from Case Western Reserve (Men's Rookie of the Year), Austen Blease from NYU (Men's Diver of the Year), Austin Campitelli from NYU (Women's Diver of the Year), Scott Donie from NYU (Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year) and the NYU Men's Swimming Coaching Staff.
