Eagles Dominate Sewanee on Senior Day

The Emory University swimming & diving teams celebrated Senior Day in style on Friday evening, not losing a single swimming event as both teams  cruised to victories over the Sewanee Panthers. The women defeated Sewanee by a score of 133-91 while the men staked claim to a 124-77 win.

Before the start of the meet, the Eagles honored their 12 graduating seniors with a pre-meet ceremony. Check out video of the Senior Day ceremony below.

For the women, senior Ellie Thompson led the way winning a pair of events. Thompson took first in the 200 IM (2:09.47) and in the 100 Back (57.60). Junior Claire Liu posted the lone NCAA “B” Cut time of the meet for the Blue and Gold, touching at 51.99 in a first place showing in the 100 Free. Adding first place finishes for Emory were sophomore Isabella Issa in the 1,000 Free (10:47.22), junior Marissa Bergh in the 200 Free (1:55.52), freshman Hannah Baratz in the 50 Free (24.53), junior Annelise Kowalsky in the 100 Fly (58.51), freshman Ava Salmi in the 500 Free (5:06.94) and senior Elizabeth Aronoff in the 100 Breast (1:05.80). Sophomore Mara Rosenstock won both diving events for the Eagles, posting scores of 277.05 in the 1-meter and 255.90 in the 3-meter.

Winning events for the men were freshman Matt Varraveto in the 1,000 Free (9:55.46), sophomore Alex Hardwick in the 200 Free (1:43.56), freshman Zachary Chen in the 50 Free (21.72), senior Matt Wu in the 200 IM (1:57.74), junior Christian Baker in the 100 Fly (50.19), freshman Trey Kolleck in the 100 Free (47.64), junior Mitchell Cooper in the 100 Back (51.32), freshman Jonathan Morse in the 500 Free (4:45.48) and sophomore Chandler Lichtefeld in the 100 Breast (59.40).

Emory also touched first in all four relay events during the meet. The team of Baratz, freshmen Ashley Daniels, Amelia Hartje and Meg Taylor won the 200 Medley with a time 1:48.89 while the 400 Free Relay quartet of Grace Swinnerton, Kowalsky, Taylor and Cindy Cheng touched at 3:36.56. For the men, the foursome of Cooper, John Copses, John Galvin and Kolleck won the 200 Medley with a time of 1:34.85. The men’s 400 Free Relay of Oliver Smith, Baker, Matt Rogers and Morse closed out the meet in the event, finishing at 3:08.10.

The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they face Georgia Tech tomorrow at 11:00 AM in the final dual meet of the 2015-16 season.
