Swimming & Diving Dominates Birm.-Southern; Bumgarner Sets 1-Meter Dive Record

The nationally-ranked Emory University swimming and diving programs were in full control Saturday afternoon in front of a packed Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center crowd, winning 28 of the 30 events contested in a dual-meet against fellow Division III member Birmingham-Southern College.

On the men’s side, the Eagles came away with event wins in all 16 events with sophomores Zach Lorson, Lucas Bumgarner and freshman Nicholas Goudie each registering a pair of event victories. Bumgarner highlighted all Emory performers as he set the school record in the 1-meter, 6-dives event.

Lorson and Goudie combined to win four of the 14 swimming events with Lorson taking top honors in both the 400 IM (4:02.83) and 500 Freestyle (4:41.41) while Goudie swept the sprint freestyles for the second straight week, posting times of 21.02 in the 50 Free and 46.58 in the 100 Free. Bumgarner turned in NCAA B Cuts on the diving boards including a new school record mark in the 1-meter with a score of 334.20 to go along with his score of 357.15 in the 3-meter, 6-dives event.

Additional Eagle winners for the men included senior Sage Ono in the 100 Backstroke (51.40), sophomore Tyler Russell in the 100 Breaststroke (58.83), sophomore Hwa Min Sim in the 100 Butterfly (50.07), freshman Alex Webster in the 1000 Freestyle (9:56.52), junior Kellen Stillman in the 200 Freestyle (1:41.47), freshman Brian Hollis in the 200 Butterfly (1:54.39), sophomore Lawrence Redmond in the 200 Backstroke (1:51.69), sophomore Jack Kelleher in the 200 Breaststroke (2:10.10) and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Stillman, junior Chris Nicholson, sophomore Alex Feldman and freshman Matthew Scruton (1:26.78).

On the women’s side, the Eagles tallied wins in all 14 swimming events on the docket with senior Caroline Olson and sophomore Clio Hancock leading the way with two wins each.

Olson was a winner in both the 100 Butterfly (57.79) and 50 Freestyle (24.42) while Hancock nabbed top honors in the 100 Backstroke (58.96) and 400 IM (4:26.65). Olson added an event win in the lone relay event of the afternoon, teaming with junior Christy Taylor and freshmen Catarina Sterlacci and Katerina Savvides to post the winning time of 1:39.18.

Other women event winners were freshman Anna Glowniak in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.71), freshman Nina Turcanu in the 1000 Freestyle (10:45.53), freshman Savannah Sowards in the 200 Freestyle (1:55.17), sophomore Allie Dixon in the 200 Butterfly (2:07.92), freshman Caroline Maki in the 100 Freestyle (52.70), sophomore Gaige Elms in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.66), freshman Sarah Byers in the 200 Breaststroke (2:25.29) and senior Maria Turcanu in the 500 Freestyle (5:09.68).

The Eagles will be idle next weekend before returning to the WoodPEC on November 8th and 9th with the Emory Invitational.
