Men Sit in Second, Women in Third After Day One of the Denison Invitational

The Emory University swimming and diving programs opened the Denison University Invitational on Thursday with the men’s team sitting in second place with 500 points and the women in third at 483 through one day of competition.

The Eagles combined had a strong showing on the opening day, totaling 25 NCAA B Cut times: 15 women, 10 men, and three event victories. After one finals session, Eastern Michigan leads with 639 on women’s side and Denison holds a 152.5-point lead over the Eagles on the men’s side.

For the Emory men, the team collected wins in three of the five events contested with sophomore Pat Pema and freshman Nicholas Goudie earning solo victories and the 400 Medley Relay of Goudie, senior Sage Ono and sophomores Jason Hamilton and Hwa Min Sim adding to the win column. Pema put forth an impressive showing in the 500 Freestyle, winning his NCAA qualifying mark of 4:23.78 and in the 50 Freestyle, Goudie threw down a winning time of 20.06.

The 200 Freestyle Relay featuring Ono, Goudie, junior Chris Nicholson and sophomore Colin LaFave contributed with a second place showing in the 200 Free Relay, touching at 1:20.34. Sophomore Zach Lorson added a top-four effort for the men as he placed fourth in the 500 Free with a finals time of 4:30.14.

On the women’s side, sophomore Clio Hancock, senior Maria Turcanu and sophomore Taylor Leone highlighted the Eagles recording top-three finishes. In the 200 IM, Hancock took silver at 2:02.27 while Turcanu was third in the 500 Free (4:56.77) with Leone added a bronze effort in the 50 Free with a time of 23.28. All three marks represented NCAA B Cuts.

The Eagles added a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay with Leone, freshman Caroline Maki, junior Lucy Daro and senior Caroline Olson combining for a NCAA B Cut of 1:32.13 and saw a pair of fourth place finishes posted by sophomore Josie Uerling in the 200 IM (2:03.70) and Olson in the 50 Freestyle (23.38).

The meet in Granville, Ohio continues on Friday with an event slate featuring the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, men’s 1-meter diving and the 800 Freestyle Relay.
