Swimming & Diving Sweeps Emory Fall Invitational

The Emory University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed a program sweep at its two-day invitational at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center in Atlanta, GA.

The Eagles edged out Wingate on the men’s side, 631-605.5, with Carson-Newman finishing third with 429.5 points. On the women’s side, the Eagles paced the trio of schools with 672 points with Wingate placing second at 593 points and CNU coming in third with 422 points. Emory collected a total of 10 event wins during the women’s portion of the meet while the Emory men checked in with eight event victories.

For the women, senior Caroline Olson, sophomore Clio Hancock and freshman Savannah Sowards combined to record all six individual wins for the Eagles. Hancock won a team-best three events and notched NCAA B Cut times in both the 200 Butterfly (2:05.22) and 400 IM (4:24.84). Sowards was a two-time winner on Saturday, claiming the 100 Backstroke at 56.59 and later won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 57.09. On Friday night, Olson registered a victory in the 100 Freestyle, posting a time of 52.08.

The Eagles swept all four relay events contested at the meet with Olson, junior Lucy Daro, sophomore Taylor Leone and freshman Caroline Maki teaming to win the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:36.36 and in the 400 Medley Relay, Olson, Daro, Maki and sophomore Edie Bates combined for a winning mark of 3:53.30 on Friday night. During session two on Saturday, Bates, Olson and Daro and Sowards claimed the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:46.42 and in the 400 Freestyle Relay, Daro, Maki, Olson and sophomore Catarina Sterlacci recorded a winning mark of 3:31.82.

For the Emory men, freshman Nicholas Goudie, sophomore Zach Lorson and junior Kellen Stillman highlighted the Eagles in the swimming events while sophomore Lucas Bumgarner registered another school-record performance on the diving beam, turning in a record score of 552.83 in the 1-meter, 11-dives event. In the swimming events, Goudie and Lorson were two-time individual winners with Goudie capturing the 100 Freestyle (46.04) and 50 Freestyle (20.80) events and Lorson earning top times in both the 1650 Freestyle (16:05.64 – NCAAB Cut) and 400 IM (4:02.64). Stillman was a solo winner for the Eagles taking first Saturday afternoon in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:41.93.

The Eagles added wins in three of the four relay events, beginning with the 200 Free Relay group of Goudie, senior Sage Ono, junior Chris Nicholson and sophomore Colin LaFave that clocked in at 1:23.66 on Friday. During session two, Ono and Goudie teamed with sophomores Jason Hamilton and Hwa Min Sim to win the 200 Medley Relay (1:33.05) and in the 400 Freestyle Relay, Goudie, Nicholson, LaFave and sophomore Pat Pema touched first with a time of 3:05.91.
