Swimming & Diving Secures Three UAA Weekly Honors

Sophomores Pat Pema, Lucas Bumgarner and freshman Caroline Maki from the Emory University swimming and diving teams were honored by the University Athletic Association Monday afternoon as the trio were tabbed as the conference’s Swimmers and Diver of the Week.

Pema contributed to three event wins as well as two more top-three finishes to help the Eagles to a second place team finish at the Denison Invitational in Granville, Ohio. Pema took first in the 500 Freestyle with his NCAA B Cut of 4:23.78 and was part of both the 800 Freestyle Relay (6:34.85) and 400 Freestyle Relay (2:57.97) wins, with both times representing NCAA B Cuts. Pema added third place efforts with NCAA qualifying times in the 200 Freestyle (1:38.03; 1:37.78 in prelims) and 200 Backstroke (1:47.83; 1:47.34 in prelims). He rounded out his weekend of swimming with fifth place finishes in both the 400 Medley Relay (3:18.69 - NCAA B Cut) and 200 Medley Relay (1:30.20 - NCAA B Cut).

Bumgarner swept the diving events for the men, recording a win in the 3-meter, 6-dives with a finals score of 334.75 (360.45 in prelims) and turned in a score of 324.50 to win the 1-meter, 6-dives event. His score in the 3-meter marked a new season-high for the sophomore.

For the women, Maki claimed one of Emory's two event wins at the Denison Invitational, helping the Eagles to a third place team finish. Her event victory came on Saturday in the 100 Freestyle as she posted a NCAA B Cut time of 50.47 in the finals. Maki added NCAA qualifying times in the 50 Freestyle (6th place - 23.63) and as part of the 200 Freestyle Relay (2nd - 1:32.13), 400 Freestyle Relay (2nd - 3:23.17), 400 Medley Relay (6th - 3:47.63) and 200 Medley Relay (5th - 1:44.85). Maki also competed in the 100 Butterfly, taking 14th at 56.85 (56.84 in prelims) and in the 100 Backstroke, placing 21st at 58.48.

The Eagles, now off until January, return to the pool on Friday, January 10th with a dual meet against Florida Southern College.
