Andrew Wilson Swims in First-Ever Olympic Mixed Medley Event; Helps USA to Second Place Finish in Prelims

Former Emory University swimmer Andrew Wilson competed in the first-ever mixed gender relay event in Olympic history on Thursday, helping the United States to a second-place finish in the 4x100 mixed medley relay preliminaries. The event is making its Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Swimming alongside Regan Smith, Tom Shields and Abbey Weitzeil, Wilson and his USA teammates posted a time of 3:41.02, the second-fastest time in the 16-team field. Wilson swam a 59.09 split as he swam the second leg of the relay and held his own as he swam next to the reigning 100m Breaststroke Gold medalist Adam Peaty from Great Britain. GB's team featuring Peaty led all countries in the prelims with a time of 3:38.75.

The finals of the 4x100 mixed medley relay is scheduled for 10:43 PM EST Friday night (7/30) and will air during NBC's primetime coverage. Wilson may be chosen to compete in the finals or could be replaced on the Breaststroke leg by Lilly King, Michael Andrew or Lydia Jacobs. A decision on USA's medal final lineup will be decided closer to the start of the race.

Although the lineup has not been announced as of Thursday evening, there is a strong possibility Wilson will also continue his Olympic program Friday morning, competing as part of the men's 4x100m medley relay. The preliminaries are scheduled to occur at 7:59 AM EST and will air live on the USA Network and NBCOlympics.com.
