Men's Swimming & Diving Build NCAA Lead on Day Two

The Emory University men's swimming & diving team increased its NCAA lead on Thursday following six more All-America finishes.

Halfway through the 2022 NCAA Championships, the Eagles are out in front with a 72-point lead with 243 team points. Denison sits in second with 171 while Johns Hopkins moved into third at 170 points.

On day two of competition, Emory racked up six All-America honors including another national runner-up effort, had five All-America Honorable Mention swims and broke two school records.

The night began as Emory tied for second in the 200 Freestyle Relay as the team of Colin LaFave, Pat Pema, Logan D'Amore and Nicholas Goudie combined to clock in at 1:19.56.

The Eagles secured a majority of their points on the evening in the 400 IM as four swimmers advanced to the championship and consolation finals. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons and senior Sean Byman each earned their first career All-America honors as Gibbons finished fourth at 3:54.90 and Byman was eighth at 3:57.05. Freshman Crow Thorsen won the consolation final with his time of 3:56.27 while Will O'Daffer was 12th overall at 3:57.75.

Junior Ryan Soh and freshman Jeff Echols followed with consolation final appearances in the 100 Fly with Soh winning the race in a program record-setting time of 47.67, coming in under his own previous team record of 47.93, and Echols placing 12th with his mark of 48.15.

The Eagles had another strong showing in the 200 Freestyle, posting a pair of top-five finishes. Goudie had his second individual top-three finish of the meet as he took bronze at 1:36.24, surpassing his previous school record of 1:36.70, while Pema took fifth with his time of 1:37.46. D'Amore added All-America Honorable Mention honors in the event as he finished 16th at 1:39.70.

The night concluded in the 400 Medley Relay as Emory's team of Soh, Echols, Goudie and Jason Hamilton came in seventh place with a time of 3:13.48.

The NCAA Championships continue on Friday with an event slate featuring the 200 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, 800 Freestyle Relay and men's one-meter diving. Prelims get underway at 10:00 AM with finals to follow at 6:00 PM in Indianapolis.
