Three from Men's Swimming & Diving Land on CSC Academic All-America Teams

Fresh off completing back-to-back national championships, three members of the Emory University men's swimming & diving team were honored Tuesday afternoon by earning Academic All-America recognition as presented by the College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly known as CoSIDA) organization.

Making their first-ever CSC Academic All-America appearance are senior Lucas Bumgarner and juniors Jake Meyer and Ryan Gibbons. Meyer was honored as a member of the First Team while Bumgarner and Gibbons both were selected to the Second Team.

With the three men's swimming & diving selections, nine Emory Eagles have now been tabbed as CSC Academic All-Americans this academic calendar with Meyer, Bumgarner and Gibbons joining Kylie Hall and Aubrey Blanchard from women's soccer, Claire Brock from women's basketball, and Taylor Leone, Caroline Maki and Sloane Donovan from women's swimming & diving. The nine selections are the most in a single academic calendar since the 2016-17 season.

Meyer is coming off an outstanding NCAA Championships performance where he captured one of three individual national championships for the Eagles and was part of the national record-setting 200 Medley Relay team that won gold for the second straight year. Meyer's national title in the 100 Breaststroke as well as his national runner-up effort in the 200 Breaststroke helped spearhead the Eagles towards their second straight national championship and third in program history. Meyer also finished 33rd in the 200 IM and swam in the prelims of the 400 Medley relay that eventually finished fifth during finals. For his career, Meyer is a three-time NCAA champion, six-time All-American and was an All-America Honorable Mention in the 200 Breaststroke as a sophomore. As a Business Administration major, Meyer currently owns a 3.88 grade-point average.

Bumgarner recently completed the most decorated diving career in Emory history this past weekend in Greensboro, adding two more national runner-up performances to his legendary resume. Across his career, Bumgarner earned All-America honors on both boards each season and was a four-time national runner-up. Furthermore, he became the first diver in UAA history to be a four-time Diver of the Year selection and finished his career as a seven-time UAA champion, eight-time All-UAA performer and owns all four Emory program records. An Emory 100 Senior Honorary earlier this year, this marks Bumgarner's second CSC/CoSIDA academic selection after previously being named to the Academic All-District Team as a junior. Bumgarner currently carries a 3.84 GPA as a Business Administration major.

Gibbons makes his first-ever CSC Academic All-America Team following his junior campaign. At this year's nationals, Gibbons earned his second straight All-America honor in the 400 IM with a fourth-place finish and added a 17th place showing in the 1650 Freestyle and was 27th in the 500 Freestyle. For his career, Gibbons is a two-time All-American, was an All-America Honorable Mention in 2022 in the 1650 Freestyle and was part of the UAA Championship team in 2022, earning a runner-up finish in the 400 IM. A Quantitative Sciences major, Gibbons currently owns a 3.92 GPA.

All three Eagles were tabbed to the CSC Academic All-District at the end of February along with sophomore Jeff Echols and proceeded to be placed on the All-America ballot for voting. CSC Academic All-America Teams are nominated and voted on by College Sport Communicators and Sports Information Directors across all Division III institutions.

The CSC Academic All-America team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a key member of their respective teams, maintain a 3.50 grade point average, be of sophomore standing or higher, and have attended their current institutions for at least one year.
