2022-23 Men's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2022-23 Men's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

For the first time in program history, the Emory University men's swimming & diving team won back-to-back national championships as the Eagles hoisted the Walnut & Bronze once again at the end of the season.

A loaded veteran core pushed the Eagles back to the top of podium as Emory outlasted Kenyon College at the 2023 NCAA Championships by a score of 532-495.5. Across the four-day meet in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Eagles garnered 24 All-America First Team honors and 13 All-America Second Team finishes. In addition, Emory established new Division III records in the 200 Medley and 800 Freestyle relay events.

A driving force in the team's national championship was the five event titles the Eagles won at the meet. Junior Jake Meyer and graduate student Jason Hamilton swept the individual breaststroke championships with Meyer winning the 100 for his first-ever individual title while Hamilton won his third straight national crown in the 200. Behind Meyer and Hamilton, the Eagles secured eight All-America finishes in the two breaststroke events to lead the way to the team title.

Senior Pat Pema came through with a dominating meet as he earned six All-America honors. Pema won gold in the 500 Freestyle, finished in the silver position in the 200 Freestyle and was part of the Eagles' national record-setting win in the 800 Freestyle Relay along with Hamilton, Crow Thorsen and Nicholas Goudie.

Another national record was set earlier in the meet as the opening night saw Meyer, Ryan Soh, Jeff Echols and Colin LaFave claimed Emory's second straight national championship in the 200 Medley Relay. Blistering splits by Echols and LaFave aided the Eagles in making history as the group broke a six-year old national record, going under the previous top DIII time of 1:26.14 set by former Eagle standouts Sage Ono, Andrew Wilson, Cooper Tollen and Oliver Smith.

The national meet also saw the end of an impeccable diving career from Lucas Bumgarner as he earned two more national runner-up finishes. Bumgarner closes the book on one of the best diving careers in UAA history, totaling eight All-America finishes including four second place showings, seven-time UAA champion, and became the first diver in conference history to be named the Diver of the Year four times after leading the Eagles to another UAA title in February. He'll leave the Eagles as the school record holder in all four diving events.

At the UAA Championships, the Eagles overtook Chicago on the final day to capture their 24th straight league championship.

Across the four-day meet which was hosted in Atlanta for the second straight year, Emory compiled nine event championships and 21 All-UAA honors. The Eagles erased a 12-point deficit on Saturday to defeat the Maroons by 25.5 points – the third closest meet in UAA history.

In addition to NCAA and UAA honors, the Eagles secured several prominent academic honors throughout the course of the season. Pema became the latest Eagle to be a recipient of the prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship while Meyer, Bumgarner and Ryan Gibbons earned Academic All-America honors by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) organization. Bumgarner also added to his ledger by being one of eight Emory student-athletes chosen to the Emory 100 Senior Honorary. Furthermore, the Eagles led all NCAA programs with 30 CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.
