Emory Men's Tennis Looks To Defend UAA Crown

Emory Men's Tennis Looks To Defend UAA Crown

The No. 2-ranked Emory University men's tennis team heads to Altamonte Springs, Fla., to compete at the University Athletic Association Championships.  Competition begins on Thursday, Apr. 26, and concludes on Saturday.  The Championships will be held at Sanlando Park.

The Eagles of head coach John Browning, 17-0 on the spring, enter the weekend as the No. 1 seed and will battle the University of Rochester, the No. 8 seed, on Thursday starting at 9:00 a.m.  The winner of that match advances to the semifinals to play either Case Western Reserve (# 4 seed) or the University of Chicago (#5 seed) on Friday at 9:00 a.m.  The title and third-place matches are slated for Saturday at 9:00 a.m.  Other quarterfinal matches on Thursday include No. 2 seed Carnegie Mellon University vs. No. 7 New York University and No. 3 seed Washington University vs. No. 6 Brandeis University.

Emory heads into the competition as two-time defending champion, having topped Washington U. by a 6-0 count in the 2011 title bout.  Seniors Dillon Pottish and Chris Goodwin helped Emory to last year's title with the duo recording 3-0 records in both singles and doubles. Pottish enters this year's Championships as the two-time MVP. The Eagles have captured 21 of the last 22 UAA crowns and have played WU in the finals for six straight years.

This year's Championships should prove interesting as five squads are ranked among the nation's top 30 D-III programs.  In addition to Emory's spot in the national polls, other conference members that are ranked include Carnegie Mellon U. (#13), Washington Univ. (#17), Case Western (#21) and Chicago (t-30th).
