The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team opened the University Athletic Championships on a strong note Thursday, defeating the University of Rochester in a quarterfinal round match. The Eagles raised their overall record to 18-0 following a 9-0 decision over the Yellowjackets who fell to 6-13.

Emory seized control of the match quickly, claiming a 3-0 advantage after doubles with the Eagles dropping a total of just five games in those contests.   Senior Dillon Pottish and freshman Brian Kowalski remained undefeated at the No. 3 post with a convincing 8-1 decision over John Lewis Etter and Matt Volkov, their eighth victory in as many outings this spring.   Other doubles points came from the senior duo of Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys at No. 1 and junior Elliott Kahler and freshman Ian Wagner at No. 2.

The Eagles were dominant in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets.  Goodwin moved to within one triumph of tying for the No. 1 mark on the school's all-time chart following a 6-1, 6-1 verdict against Brian Rice at No. 2.  Pottish saw his spring record move to 15-1 (24-2 overall) after coming away a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Boris Borovcanin at the No. 1 position.    A quartet of freshmen – Brian Kowalski (#3), Ian Wagner (#4), Eric Halpern (#5) and Alex Ruderman (#6) all notched wins over their UR foes.

With the victory, Emory advances to Friday's semifinal round where it will battle #21-ranked Case Western (14-7).  The Spartans earned a spot in the semis as a result of defeating No. 30 Chicago, 6-3.
