No. 2 Emory Men's Tennis Beats Case In UAA Semifinals -- Will Meet Wash U. For League Title

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team will play in the University Athletic Association Championships match for the 25th straight year after defeating No. 21 Case Western Reserve in the semifinals on Friday.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 19-0 following an 8-1 verdict over the Spartans who fell to 14-8.

One of the Emory highlights of the match was senior Chris Goodwin tying the school record for most singles wins in a career.  Goodwin, playing the No. 2 spot, defeated Sean Carr, 6-4, 6-2, raising his total to 99 victories, deadlocking him with Gavin O'Connell (1987-91) for the No. 1 spot.  Goodwin, who boosted his overall season record to 16-1 , helped spearhead a strong effort by the Eagles' singles contingent that saw the other five matches all decided in straight sets.  Senior Dillon Pottish boosted his 2011-12 slate to 25-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 outcome over Will Drougas at No. 1.  The win represented Pottish's 88th career victory over his three seasons in the program and enabled him to move into fifth place on the Eagles' all-time chart in singles victories.

Freshman Ian Wagner breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 4, his 17th win in 19 outings this spring, while classmate Eric Halpern saw his record go to 17-1 this spring following a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at No. 5.  Freshman Brian Kowalski came away with his sixth win six tries at No. 3 (12-4 overall) this spring after a 6-3, 7-5 win against Kyle Gerber.  Rounding out Emory's singles play was rookie Alex Ruderman with a 6-4, 6-0, verdict at No. 6, that raised his mark this spring to 17-0 (15-0 at No. 6).

Emory held a 2-1 advantage after doubles with the No. 1 team of Goodwin and senior Will Humphreys and the No. 3 duo of Pottish and Kowalski earning those points.

The Eagles will battle No. 17-ranked Washington University for the conference crown on Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m.  The Bears landed a spot in the finals following a 5-4 decision over Carnegie Mellon that raised their record to 15-5.  It will mark the seventh straight year that Emory and Wash U have met in the finals.
