Emory Men's Tennis Tops N. Carolina Wesleyan -- Advances To Quarterfinals of NCAA Championships

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis  team has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA D-III Championships following a victory over No. 19 North Carolina Wesleyan in the regional final played Sunday afternoon at Emory University.   The Eagles raised their overall record to 22-0 following a 5-1 decision over the Battling Bishops who closed out the campaign with a won-lost slate of 17-3. 

Emory made the most of the doubles portion of the match, claiming a 3-0 edge after sweeping all three contests.  Junior Elliott Kahler and freshman Ian Wagner posted the team's first point with an 8-4 win at No. 2, their 19th victory in 22 decisions this spring.   Senior Dillon Pottish and freshman Brian Kowalski increased their record to 12-0 this spring following an impressive 8-2 decision over Fred Lemongo and Marcelo Prata at the No. 3 spot.  The senior tandem of Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys accounted for the tri-fecta with their 8-5 verdict over Robet Kjellberg and Alexey Rumyantsev at No. 1 boosting their ledger to 9-3 on the spring.

Pottish gave the Eagles a 4-0 edge with a methodical 6-2, 6-2 triumph at first singles against Rinat Khussainov, his 19th decision in 20 outings this spring.  After the Bishops registered their lone point of the day at No. 2 singles, Kowalski closed out the match at No. 4 singles by bettering Viktor Selander, 6-3, 6-3.

Emory will take on No. 13-ranked Johns Hopkins (19-4) in the quarterfinals in on May 21.  The Blue Jays earned a spot in the round of eight following a 5-2 decision over No. 12 Middlebury in a regional final.   Emory's appearance in the quarters will mark the 21st time in 23 years that it has advanced that far in the national tourney.   The Eagles have earned a spot in the national semifinals in nine of the past 10 seasons and captured team championships in 2003 and 2006.
