Emory's Chris Goodwin Named To Capital One Academic All-America Second Team

Emory University men's tennis player Chris Goodwin has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Goodwin captured a second-team berth in recognition for his achievements both on the tennis court and in the classroom during the 201-12 season.

Goodwin helped the Eagles to the program's third national title this past year with the squad chalking up a 25-0 won-lost ledger, the first perfect season in school annals.  Battling through injuries for the majority of the year, the recently graduated Goodwin compiled an overall record of 17-5 in singles action, 12-4 during the spring portion of the schedule.  Along the way, he earned his fourth consecutive selection to the All-UAA First Team at No. 2 singles and closed out his playing tenure as the school's all-time leader in wins in both singles (100-24) and doubles (95-31) play.

Academically, Goodwin finished with a 3.32 grade point average as a History major.  A three-time UAA academic honoree, earlier in the spring he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team.

All totaled, Emory now has 133 athletes who have been named Academic All-Americans.  Goodwin is the first member of the men's tennis program to capture Academic All-America status since Jesse Ferlianto landed a first-team berth in 2005-06.

Sports represented on the 'At-Large' team include women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, and be selected to an Academic All-District team.
