Emory Men's Tennis Falls To Bowdoin In D-III Championships Semifinals

The No. 1-ranked Emory men's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday, falling to Bowdoin College in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championships.  The Eagles saw their 10-match win streak snapped, and finished the season with an overall record of 23-4 following a 5-4 setback to the No. 4-ranked Polar Bears, who raised their mark to 19-3.  The D-III Championships are being held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Emory held a 2-1 advantage in the match after the conclusion of doubles.  The No. 2 team of senior Rafe Mosetick and freshman Jonathan Jemison got back into the win column and accounted for the opening point of the bout with an 8-3 triumph over BC's Jerry Jiang and Grant Urken, their 20th victory in 24 decisions.  Sophomore Scott Rubinstein and freshman James Spaulding upped the Eagles' lead to 2-0 after topping Luke Tercek and Luke Trinka at the No. 1 spot, 8-5.  Bowdoin stayed within striking distance and earned its initial point at third doubles, with Gil Roddy and Chase Savage winning over Emory's David Omsky and Andrew Harrington, 9-7.

Bowdoin captured the opening two singles matches, propelling it to a 3-2 lead. Grant Urken bettered Emory's Andrew Harrington at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3, ending Harrington's seven-match unbeaten streak, before Roddy bested Eagle junior Josh Goodman, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5.  Freshman Adrien Bouchet stopped BC's momentum with his 6-2, 7-6 decision over Jian at No. 4 knotting the match score at 3-3, while boosting his season record to 23-7. The Polar Bears regained the lead after Luke Tercek rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, win over Mosetick at No. 1.  Jemison then tied the score at 4-4 with an intense 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Kyle Wolfe at No. 2, his 11th straight positive result and 27th out of 31 matches this year.  The match's final point come down to third singles where BC's Trinka grinded out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) decision over Aman Manji.

While team portion of the Championships have concluded for Emory, Mosetick and Jemison continue on in the Singles Championships and Rubinstein and Spaulding in the doubles competition.  Action in those events starts on Thursday and runs through Saturday.
