2021-22 Men's Tennis Season Recap

2021-22 Men's Tennis Season Recap

Coming off back-to-back national championships, the Emory University men's tennis team battled several challenges in its return to a full season of competition in 2021-22 but was still able to make its way to the national quarterfinals for a 22nd consecutive season.

After finishing 8-10 during the spring slate, the Eagles were able to snag the final at-large selection to the NCAA tournament and were sent to Mary Washington for the opening weekend. Matched up with the host Eagles in the second round, the Emory Eagles put forth an impressive comeback to win 5-3. Sophomore Nolan Shah provided the pivotal moment in the match as he won 13 straight points to win at No. 3 singles, paving the way to the come-from-behind win.

Emory then matched up with nationally-ranked Trinity (TX) in the regional finals and needed another massive comeback to book a trip to Orlando for the final rounds of the tournament. Trailing 4-2 to the Tigers, the Eagles built its comeback on the backs of Santiago Suarez, Ryan Glanville and Shah. Suarez was the first to finish picking a straight win before Shah added another win as he won via retirement, leading to a winner-take-all point at No. 6 featuring Glanville where he rallied to win 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 including a brilliant ace for match point.

Unfortunately, Emory's run came to an end in the next round as he went up against top-ranked and top-seeded Chicago at the USTA National Campus. The Maroons, who went on to win the national title, defeated the Eagles by a 5-0 count in the first meeting of the two schools of the year.

Following the team portion of the national championships, Shah and senior Andrew Esses headlined the team during the individual championships as they made a run to the NCAA Division III Doubles National Championship match. Esses & Shah knocked off teams from George Fox, Trinity and WashU to become the fourth Emory doubles team to play for a national title but they saw their run end in the championship match as they fell in straight sets to UAA counterparts James Hopper and Jonathan Powell from Case Western Reserve.

For their efforts, the Esses & Shah duo captured ITA All-America honors as they were two of three players to be named as All-Americans. Senior Sahil Raina added All-America honors for his work in doubles as he paired with Esses to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Cup after capturing south Regional crown in the fall.

Furthermore, the three players were among five Eagles to be honored by the UAA at the conclusion of the UAA Championships where Emory finished fourth as a team. Esses and Shah earned First Team recognition for their doubles play and were joined by senior Antonio Mora who was named to the First Team for his singles efforts. Esses and Shah added Second Team acclaim for singles while Raina and Glanville were tabbed to the Honorable Mention list in doubles.

In the final rankings that were released in June, Mora and Esses were ranked #24 and #30 respectively in the nation's singles rankings with Esses and Shah slotted second in the doubles rankings. Regionally, Mora, Esses and Shah were among the top-20 in singles while Esses/Shah topped the regional doubles teams with Mora/Samuel Dean checking in at #17.
