The Emory University track and field teams opened up their
2010-11 season on Saturday with a number of strong performances at
the Orange and Purple Winter Classic at Clemson University.
Emory sophomore Nelson Nwannunu recorded the lone
provisional qualifying mark of the meet for the Eagles, jumping a
distance of 6.94 meters in the long jump for a fourth-place finish
overall. Nwannunu was also Emory’s top finisher in the
60-meter dash, coming in 28th with a time of 7.40
seconds.
In the men’s 800-meter run, senior Jason
Campbell led all Eagles with a sixth-place finish and a
time of 1:58.63, while senior Everett Bryant
claimed 19th in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.85
seconds. In the long sprints, junior Ian
Francis finished 18th in the 300-meter dash
(37.21 seconds), while sophomore Isaac Chambers
finished 15th in the 500-meter dash with a time of
1:08.59, just five-hundredths of a second shy of his own school
record in the event. Rounding out the running events for
Emory, freshman Alex Fleischhacker finished ninth
in the mile with a time of 4:39.12, while the Eagles’
4x400-meter relay team finished eighth with a time of 3:27.62.
In the throw events, junior Ben Euwer finished
seventh in the shot put with a distance of 12.97 meters, while
senior Thomas Bright was Emory’s top
performer in the weight throw with a toss of 13.20 meters, good for
a fourth-place finish. Rounding out the field events,
sophomore Tony Lombardo finished sixth in the pole
vault, clearing a height of 4.30 meters, while freshman
Scott Greathouse finished fifth in the high jump,
clearing 1.85 meters.
For the women, senior Alycia Adams broke the
school record in the 300-meter dash, recording a time of 42.06
seconds, good for a 20th-place finish in the
event. Also in the long sprints, junior Alix
Dyer claimed 11th-place in the 500-meter dash
with a time of 1:20.51.
In the 60-meter dash, freshman Gabrielle Clark led
all Eagles with a 27th-place finish and a time of 8.12
seconds, while junior Jasmine McCullough finished
23rd in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 9.61
seconds. Rounding out the track events for Emory, the
Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team placed eighth with a time of
4:03.67.
In the field events, junior Lauren Attiah led the
Eagles in both the high jump and long jump, finishing fourth in the
former with a height of 1.60 meters, and ninth in the latter with a
distance of 5.22 meters. In the shot put, freshman
Rasheika Martin finished 16th with a
throw of 9.35 meters.
The Eagles will resume their indoor schedule on January 15, 2011,
traveling to Boone, NC for the Mountaineer Open at Appalachian
State University.
