Wheeler Wilson Earns UAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Week Award

Freshman Wheeler Wilson was recognized as the University Athletic Association Men's Indoor Field Co-Athlete of the Week after he set a new Emory record in the men's indoor shotput at the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker competition this past Friday. It is the first time that the Winter Park, Florida native has captured the honor. Wilson shares the award with Case Western Reserve University's Dominic Oddo.

Wilson produced a 15.04m toss in his collegiate debut, which eclipsed the previous record of 14.77m that was set by Ben Euwer in 2012. His throw put him in 5th-place at the meet, which did not feature team scoring, and trailed only Division I competitors from Memphis, Alabama State, and Samford. Wilson's effort gives him the 10th-longest throw in DIII and is No.-1 in the UAA.

The Emory Men's Track and Field Program can expect similar outcomes in the future for the reigning Florida High School State Champion out of 2A Trinity Prep. Wilson emerged as the victor in the Outdoor State Championships in the Sunshine State this past May with a 16.36m throw. However, Wilson's personal best mark from his high school career came in the Pepsi Florida Relays, where he heaved the shot 17.25m in that outdoor event.

Wheeler Wilson and the Eagles are not slated to return to competition until after the holiday break, when they will return to the Birmingham Crossplex for the University of Alabama-Birmingham Vulcan Invitational on Saturday, January 11th
