After seeing its spring season cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Emory University men’s track and field team returned to competition in 2021 to take part in a full spring slate.
Senior Jack Whetstone and junior Brett Henshey highlighted the Eagles during the outdoor season as they represented Emory at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. Whetstone made his first-ever NCAA Championships appearance in track as he qualified in the 5000m run while Henshey made his second appearance in the NCAA outdoor high jump. Henshey finished 13th overall in the field with Whetstone placing 14th.
The duo were also among the eight men who were tabbed as USTFCCCA South/Southeast All-Region selections for the spring. Joining Whetstone and Henshey as All-Region picks were Jacob Hedgepeth in the 1500m run, JonCarlo Migaly in the long jump, Spencer Moore in the 3000m steeplechase, Thomas Perretta in the 800m run and Kenya Sei and Michael Tiffin in the hammer throw.
Despite the 2021 University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships being cancelled due to the pandemic, five different Eagles were chosen as UAA Athletes of the Week over the course of the year: Henshey and Spencer Watry (March 22), Whetstone (April 12) and Moore and Migaly (May 3).
Another highlight for the 2021 outdoor season included one school record falling as Sei broke the hammer mark at the Life Last Chance Meet, putting forth a throw of 53.92m.
In total, the Eagles were able to compete in 10 meets during the 2021 outdoor campaign, finishing as high as first at both the Clark Atlanta Panther Invitational and BSC Hilltop Classic.
