Men Take Second, Women Finish Third at UAB Spring Invite

The Emory University track & field team competed at the UAB Spring Invite in Birmingham, AL this weekend with the men finishing in second place while the women posted a third place result.

The men’s team recorded 120 points over the two-day meet to finish in second place. Berry finished in the gold medal position with a score of 135 points while Birmingham-Southern rounded out the podium with 74 points. The women registered a two-day total of 80.5 points which saw them trail only UAB (158) and Georgia State (97).

On the track for the men, freshman Jackson Price continued his outstanding inaugural outdoor season. Jackson registered two second place finishes at the meet, recording a time of 21.64 in the 200m dash while also finishing in second with a time of 42.57 seconds in the 4x100 relay along with teammates freshman Sam Ryba, senior Jacob Solomon and graduate student Liam Fost. Elsewhere on the track, freshman Dawit Dean, competing in the 400m dash, crossed the finish line in 49.67 seconds which was good for second place and sees him sit 28th in the nation according to TFRRS. Senior Jacob Hedgepeth registered a second place finish of his own in the 1,500m run posting a time of 3:56.39 seconds which is the 31st best time of any individual in the nation this year.

On the field for the men, sophomore Kenya Sei registered a top five finish in both the discus throw and hammer throw. In the discus, Sei recorded a distance of 37.70m which was good for fifth while in the hammer throw he posted a 46.51m result which tied him for third with teammate Michael Tiffin. Graduate student Maxwell Prizant continued to impress in the pole vault event, reaching a distance of 4.35m to finish in second place. Freshman John Zhai posted the best result of his young career in the triple jump, registering a new personal best 13.27m which sees him in the top 50 individuals in the country so far this season.

On the track for the women, junior Annika Urban continued her winning ways posting a first place finish in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:38.95. This marks Urban’s best time of the season and sees her in tenth in the country according to TFRRS. Sophomore Libby Ranocha registered a time of 59.57 seconds in the 400m dash which is the 42nd best time of any individual in the nation this season. Freshman Sammie Glass recorded a new personal best time in the 400m hurdle with a time of 1:10.45 to earn a sixth place finish at the meet.

On the field for the women, senior Alex Devaux set a new personal record in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.87m to finish in second place at the meet. Devaux’s 49.87m distance is the tenth best in program history and also sees her sitting in 11th in the nation this season. Junior Hope Jackson registered a second place finish in the discus throw with a distance of 39.09m. Freshman Sarah Fineman posted a fourth place finish in both the discus throw (34.04m) and the shot put (12.26m). Freshman Dana Catalano posted the best distance of any Eagle this season in the javelin throw, recording a distance of 36.09m for a fifth place finish.

The Eagles return to action next weekend at the Lee Flames Invitational in Cleveland, TN with the meet set to get underway on the afternoon of Friday, April 8th.
