Track & Field Turns in Stellar Performances at the BU Hemery Invitational and Bulldog Open

The Emory University indoor track & field team continued its stellar season on Saturday as a small contingent of Eagles competed at the BU Hemery Valentine in Boston, MA while the rest of the team took part in the Bulldog Open in Birmingham, AL.

Competing in the BU Hemery Valentine, senior Spencer Moore set another program record, his third of the season, this time establishing the school record in the 3,000m run by crossing the finish line in 8:16.40. Moore's time beats out Shane Sullivans time of 8:22.85 set back in 2017 and is the 16th fastest time in Division III this season putting him in nationals contention. Graduate student Ethan Thompson had a fantastic day in the 3,000m run as well, racing to a time of 8:27.82 which is the fourth fastest time in program history.

Also competing at the BU Hemery Valentine, junior Spencer Watry registered a time of 1:52.26 in the 800m run narrowly missing out on beating his own program record time of 1:51.95 which he set at this meet last season. Sophomore Marcus Cheema finished a tenth of a second behind Watry with a time of 1:52.36 which sees him with the third fastest time in program history. Watry and Cheema's times place them with the 15th and 16th fastest times in the 800m run this season which has them both in nationals contention.

Graduate Nyjah Willis, taking part in the Samford Open, recorded a distance of 6.22m in the weight throw marking the second farthest distance in program history and the 32nd best in Division III this season. Also competing on the field, sophomore Sarah Fineman turned in a distance of 12.43m in the shot put which is a new personal best and the eighth best in the history of the program.

The men performed well in the field at the Samford Open as well with junior Kenya Sei notching a distance of 15.42m in the weight throw event which sees him holding the sixth farthest distance in program history. Freshman Steven Ditelberg had the best day of his young career as he cleared a height of 4.32m in the pole vault which is the tenth highest jump for an Eagle in the program's history.

On the track at the Samford Open, senior Brett Lucas had a remarkable day in the 3,000m run, crossing the finish line in a time of 8:29.96 which is the eighth fastest in program history. Senior Tommy Davis continued his exemplary career in an Eagles uniform as he turned in a time of 22.27 seconds in the 200m dash which marks the ninth fastest time in program history. For the women, sophomore Audrey Johnson registered a time of 7.84 seconds in the 60m dash which sees her with a top 50 time in Division III this season.

The Eagles are back in action next weekend as they compete in their final regular season meet of the indoor season at the U of SC Open in Columbia, SC on Friday, February 17th.
