Eagles Open Outdoor Season at Emory Spring Break Classic

After the first day of competition at the Emory Spring Break Classic, the Emory University track & field team sits in the top two for both the men and women with one day of competition left on the slate in Atlanta. The men lead the meet having tallied 46 points while the women sit in second with a score of 51.5. 

Senior Spencer Moore continues to build on his stellar senior season with the Eagles as he won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:14.59 which earned him a first place finish in the event. Moore's time stands as the seventh fastest time in program history and the fastest time in the nation in the early part of the season. Sophomore Jack Petkash turned in a meet win in the 1,500m run invitational as he raced to a time of 3:58.47 which is the eighth fastest time in Division III. Also competing in the 1,500m invitational, senior Brett Lucas (3:59.25), senior Andrew Pahnke (4:00.68), senior Justin Pecore (4:00.76) and junior Tristan Olpin (4:03.21) all finished in scoring position as well. 

Competing on the field for the men, junior Kenya Sei tossed a distance of 50.44m to finish in third in the weight throw competition with his distance standing as the eighth best in program history. Sophomore Geoff Point-du-Jour won the high jump competition as he recorded a height of 1.85m. Sophomore John Zhai turned in a second place finish in the long jump as he reached a distance of 6.63m on his best jump of the afternoon.

Competing on the track for the women, sophomore Jenna Daly showed out for the Eagles racing to a time of 4:45.29 to place first in the 1,500m run. Her time is the third best in Division III to this point in the season according to TFRRS. Finishing just behind Daly was sophomore Liesl Scherrer who placed second in the event after crossing the finish line in a time of 4:51.54. Junior Clementine Bodus had a standout performance of her own placing third in the 400m hurdle with a time of 1:07.58, the sixth fastest time of the outdoor season in the nation. Junior Amaya Martin (1:08.45), sophomore Caroline Hansen ( 1:09.62) and sophomore Sammie Glass (1:11.39) all finished in scoring position in the 400m hurdle as well.

Competing on the field for the women, graduate student Nyjah Willis notched a distance of 45.88m to win the hammer throw event and in doing so recorded the fourth best distance in Division III this season. Sophomore Dana Catlano placed second after she recorded a distance of 31.32m in the javelin throw. In the jumping events, sophomore Maura Dianno (4.94m) placed seventh in the long jump while sophomore Paige Thielke (1.40m) finished in eighth in the high jump.

The Eagles are back in action for the final day of the Emory Spring Break Classic tomorrow as the men and women each look to record their first team wins of the outdoor season.
