Track and Field Returns with Crossplex Showdown, Five Program Records Broken

The Emory University indoor track and field team was back for the new year hosting the annual Emory Crossplex Showdown on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. Five different program records were broken at the event, two from the women and three from the men.

The women's team placed first of the 20 teams competing tallying an impressive 140 points while silver medalist Clayton State finished with 76 points and Rhodes came in third with 62 points. The Emory men also finished first of 24 teams with 125.5 points. Montevallo came in second place with 78 team points followed by the Clayton State men with 65 points.

Leading the way for the women was senior Libby Ranocha who set another program record, this time in the 600m, where she ran a time of 1:35.48 to beat her previous school record of 1:39.32 set in 2022 at the Camel City Invitational. She was also a part of the 4x200m relay with fellow senior Audrey Johnson, junior Kaya Binetti and junior Mina Leopold running a time of 1:44.42 to break the second record of the day. Also on the track for the women was senior Julia Danko who placed first in the 3,000m with a time of 10:58.75 Johnson took second in the 200m with a time of 25.35 while in the 1 mile run, the Eagles took second through seventh with all times coming within nine seconds of each other.

On the field for the women, junior Sarah Fineman took home the gold in the shot put with a distance of 11.75m. Freshman Dijaye Carpenter and sophomore Selah Eum picked up Top-10 finishes in the triple jump with distances of 9.84m and 9.65m respectively. Senior Paige Thielke made the height of 1.45m for a fourth place finish while freshman Hannah Riley took third in pole vault with a height of 3.40m

On the track for the men was junior Chris Belz who ran a time of 1:21.56 to break the school record in the 600m. Sophomore Henry Brandstadter, freshman Graham Greene, senior Dawit Dean and junior Jackson Price ran a 1:29.92 in the 4x200m to break the school record. Juniors Geoff Point-du-Jour and Sam Ryba sophomore Bryce Wurster and freshman Theodore Drye followed right behind with a time of 1:30.36 to place second in program history. Graduate student Ethan Thompson finished first in the 3,000m with a time of 8:24.76 to set the meet record.

On the field for the men, senior Kenya Sei took home second in the weight throw with a distance of 16.52m to break the program record, the fifth broken record of the day. Brandstadter picked up a second place finish on the day in the high jump with a height of 1.90m.

The Eagles will travel to Winston Salem, North Carolina on Friday, January 26 for the first day of the Camel City Invitational.
