Eagles Open Outdoor Season with Strong First Day of Emory Spring Break Classic

The Emory University track and field program opened its outdoor season on Friday afternoon with the annual Spring Break Classic hosted by Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

The men placed first out of 15 teams after the first day of competition with 62 points while the women rank 11th out of 18 teams.

Starting on the field for the men was senior Kenya Sei who took a first place finish in the hammer throw with a program record 57.60m breaking his previous record of 54.96m last season. Also on the field for the men was graduate student Aiden Gilbert who finished second in the long jump with a distance of 6.64m. Freshmen Isaac Smith and Kofi Igyan also competed in the long jump taking fourth and sixth respectively.

Junior Geoff Point-du-Jour and Henry Brandstadter saw a fifth and sixth place finish in the high jump both with a height of 1.85m.

Junior Jackson Price started things off for the men on the track with a fifth place finish in the 200m running a 21.81 followed by a ninth place finish from freshman Theodore Drye with a time of 22.08. Sophomore Nikhil Makker kicked off the distance events with a second place finish in the 1500 invitational finishing with a time of 3:57.17 followed by a third place mark from junior Jonathan Orelowitz in the 3000m steeplechase (10:00.03).

Finishing on the track for the men was freshman Olin Gilster, senior Tristan Olpin and freshman Kirin Karver who took sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in the 5000m to finish the day.

On the field for the women was senior Sarah Fineman who started the day with a fourth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 12.25m. Fellow senior Paige Thielke also saw a top-10 finish in the high jump with a height of 1.45m.

Senior Amaya Martin got things started on the track for the women with a top-15 finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.25. Sophomore Luna McCauley opened the distance events for the women with a seventh place finish in the 1500 invitational running a 4:49.01 followed by freshman Elizabeth Csikai taking ninth with a time of 9:49.24. Senior Elle Haushalter finished the day for Emory in the 5000m finishing sixth with a mark of 18:12.90.

The Eagles will conclude the Emory Spring Break Classic on Saturday, March 16 with the first event slated to begin at 9:30 AM.
