Brandstadter Reaches Podium to Open NCAA Championships; Sets School Record in Long Jump

Members of the Emory University track & field teams opened the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships Thursday afternoon at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Sophomore Henry Brandstadter began the meet with a record-setting performance in the long jump as he became the Eagles' first podium finisher of the weekend. Brandstadter achieved a school record mark of 7.56m on his third jump of the day to smash his previous program record of 7.44m. With his effort, Brandstadter collected his second straight All-America honor in the event, taking third after placing eighth a year ago.

In addition to his podium finish, Emory saw the women's 4x100m relay team of graduate student Nikki Boon, and juniors Dashiel Tao Harris, Kaya Binetti and Audrey Johnson come through with the second fastest prelim time to advance to Saturday's final. Johnson's blistering anchor leg helped the Eagles turn in a time of 46.45 as the Eagles won the first heat.

Boon continued her busy Thursday as she took part in the opening stages of the heptathlon and stands third with 3,173 points through four events. She placed first in the shot put with a throw of 13.26m while adding finishes of fifth in the 100m Hurdles (14.55), eighth in the high jump (1.57m) and tenth in the 200m Dash (25.68). Furthermore, Boon was part of the long jump field and came in 20th out of 22 participants at 5.41m

Nearly missing the cut in the 200m Dash was Johnson as placed third in her heat and was tenth overall at 24.27, earning second team All-America acclaim. Price placed 19th in the 22-person field in the men's 200m, crossing in a time of 21.47. Rounding out the first day of events was Price and Brandstadter running alongside graduate student Aiden Gilbert and junior Sam Ryba in the men's 4x100m. The group took 16th overall with a time of 41.35.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships continue Friday with the final legs of the heptathlon as well as prelims for Johnson in the 100m, Harris in the 400m, and seniors Spencer Watry and Dawit Dean in the 800m Run.
