2003 Men's Cross Country Season Recap

Emory University completed the season with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Division III national championships, the second-best finish in school history and the best since 1986. This was the fifth consecutive year the team qualified for the national meet.

Phil Hagedorn earned All-America honors, the first Eagle to do so since 1987 and the third in school history. He finished 13th out of 215 runners, the second-highest finish in school history at the national meet.

Emory finished the season ranked 24th in the national poll and was ranked in 10 of the 12 polls during the season.

The team won the NCAA regional title for the fifth consecutive year. Emory put three runners in the top five at the regional meet and had six runners on the all-region team for the first time in school history. The Eagles also put their top five runners in the top 25 for the fifth consecutive year. Hagedorn became the first Eagle ever to win two consecutive individual titles at the NCAA regional meet.

Emory finished second overall, first among Division III teams, at the Georgia Collegiate Championships. Four Eagles earned all-state honors, a first in school history.

Hugo Aparicio
The senior was the seventh runner for the Eagles at the NCAA national meet. He ran a season best time of 26 minutes and 42 seconds at the Southeastern Classic. His best finish on the team was fifth at the conference meet.

Adam Brunfeldt
The senior co-captain earned all-region honors for the second time and all-state honors for the first time. He finished among the top 10 runners overall in both the regional meet and the state championships. Brunfeldt ran a career best time of 26 minutes and 2 seconds at the Southeastern Classic. He finished among the top five for the Eagles in every race this season and had the fourth-fastest season average time on the team. He also earned the team's Coaches' Award.

Owen Farcy
The junior earned all-region honors for the first time with a 19th place finish at the NCAA regional meet. He ran a season best time of 26 minutes and 34 seconds at the Georgia Collegiate Championships where he finished 16th, just missing all-state honors by two spots. He was named the region's "Fifth Runner of the Year" by Southregionrunning.com.

Phil Hagedorn
The senior co-captain earned All-America honors for the first time by placing 13th out of 215 runners at the NCAA national meet, becoming the third Eagle All-American and the first since 1987. He also earned all-region, all-conference, and all-state honors for the fourth consecutive year. He won the NCAA regional individual championship for the second consecutive year becoming the first Eagle to ever achieve that feat. He is the fourth Emory runner ever to earn all-region honors all four years. He finished eighth at the University Athletic Association championships for a third consecutive top-ten finish in his career at the conference meet. At the Southeastern Classic, Hagedorn ran a season best time of 25 minutes and 33 seconds, the fastest time for the Eagles this season. His season average time of 25 minutes and 57 seconds was the best on the team, as was his winning percentage of .952. His season winning percentage was the third best in school history. His season win total of 1,090 wins was the sixth best in Emory history. He was the top finisher for Emory in seven of the eight races this season and he finished among the top 15 runners overall in every meet this season. Hagedorn has the most career wins (4,348) and the second-highest career winning percentage (.866) in school history. He was named the team's Most Valuable Performer. He was named the regional Runner of the Year by Southregionrunning.com.

Rob Leventhal
The freshman ran a season best time of 27 minutes and 15 seconds at the Southeastern Classic. He ran among the top seven for the Eagles in four races this season. He was named the Most Outstanding Newcomer on the team.

Jake Marren
The senior made the all-region time for the first time. He ran a career best time of 26 minutes and 25 seconds at the Southeastern Classic. He finished among the top six runners for the Eagles in every race this season and had the fifth-best season average time on the team. Marren received the Most Improved Runner award for the team. He lowered his season average time by more than a minute and a half from 28:59 last season to 27:22 this year.

Andrew Podgurski
The junior earned a spot on the all-region team for the third consecutive year and the all-state team for the first time. His best finish of the season came at the NCAA regional meet where he placed fourth out of 139 runners. He ran a career best time of 25 minutes and 49 seconds at the Southeastern Classic. Podgurski had 1,010 wins for the season, the second highest win total on the team and the 11th highest in school history. He finished among the top three runners for Emory in every race this season and had the second-best season average time on the team.

Paul Tufaro
The senior made the all-region team for the third consecutive time and the all-state team for the second time. His best finish came at the NCAA regional meet where he earned third place out of 139 runners. He ran a season best time of 25 minutes and 56 seconds at the Georgia Collegiate Championships. He finished among the top four for the Eagles in every meet and had the third-fastest season average time on the team.
