The 2010 Emory University men's and women's cross country teams head into the homestretch of the season on Saturday (Nov. 13) when they take part in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships.  This year's competitions will be held at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tenn.  Serving as the host institution for the Championships is Rhodes College.  The men's 8K race will begin at 11:00 a.m. while the women's 6K event is slated for a noon start.

There are eight regional championships being conducted around the country with the top two men's and women's teams from each regional earning automatic bids to the NCAA National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 20, in Waverly, Iowa.  In addition, there will be 16 at-large teams selected for both the men's and women's championships.

The Emory women's team has enjoyed considerable success over the years at the NCAA Regionals, logging first-place efforts in 16 of the past 19 seasons.  In 2009, the Eagles finished second out of 27 teams with Rhodes College capturing first-place honors. Two members of this year’s team, junior Tess Gallegos and senior Natalie Fenn, look to repeat their strong performances of a year ago that saw them earn all-region honors after placing ninth and tenth, respectively, in the 189-runner field.  Sophomore Calley Edwards is another of this year’s entries who came away with all-region recognition by virtue of her 26th-place finish.  In its most recent outing, the Emory women's team came in fifth at the University Athletic Association Championships (Oct. 30).  Gallegos was the top performer for the Eagles with an eighth-place showing in the 76-runner that enabled her to garner second-team All-UAA acclaim.  Fenn also earned second-team acclaim after crossing the finish line in 11th position.  Heading into this weekend’s action, Emory is ranked 27th nationally and first in the South/Southeast Region.

Last year, a senior-dominated men’s team captured first place for the second time in the past three seasons.  Emory topped the 24-team field with 33 points, well ahead of runner-up Lynchburg’s total of 102 points.  However, this year’s team returns just  one performer from that race.   At the recently held UAA Championships, Emory finished eighth.
