Emory Cross Country Teams To Race At Furman Classic

The Emory University men's and women's cross country teams continue their seasons on Saturday (Sept. 14) when they compete in the inaugural Furman University Cross Country Classic.  The meet will be held at the Furman University Golf Course with the women’s 6k race starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men’s 8k competition at 9:00 a.m.

At least 35 schools will be sending teams to the Classic including Division I members, Georgia, Georgia Tech. Duke, Clemson, host Furman and Georgia State.  In addition to Emory, some of the other Division III schools that will take to the course include Lynchburg, Berry College, Piedmont and Oglethorpe.

The Emory women’s side, ranked 33rd nationally among D-III squads, is coming off a first-place finish out of eight teams at the Sewanee Invitational last weekend.  The Eagles saw three runners rank among the top four overall finishers including junior Tamara Surtees who topped the 88-runner field with a 6k effort of 24:25.  Senior Emily Caesar clocked a 24:33, good for the No. 3 spot while junior Marissa Gogniat claimed fourth place with a mark of 24:45.  Rounding out the Emory scorers were freshman Michelle Kagei (25:21) and junior Elise Viox (25:22), who turned in ninth- and tenth-place finishes, respectively.

The men’s unit enjoyed a solid outing at Sewanee, recording a second-place finish out of eight teams.  Running as a group, Emory came away with the 8-through-12 individual finishing positions, headed up by senior Eddie Mulder who turned in an 8k time of 28:31.6.  Freshman Michael McBane was right behind Mulder with an effort of 28:31.8 while junior Tyler Cooke was the next to cross the finish line in 28:32.1.  Junior Cameron Wheeler (28:32.3) and senior Alex Fleischhacker (28:32.5) closed out the team’s scorers.
