The Emory men’s and women’s cross country teams turned in solid efforts at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday.

Competing in the Blue Division, the men’s squad turned in a fourth-place effort out of 26 teams, finishing with 225 points. Emmanuel took home the top spot with 62 points while Embry-Riddle was runner-up with 134 points.  Tennessee Wesleyan was third (159 pts.) while Mars Hill rounded out the top five with 229 points.   Junior Tyler Cooke was the Eagles’ No. 1 runner, clocking a personal-best 8K time of 26:36 that placed him 41st out of 289 runners.  Senior Alex Fleischhacker was one spot behind Cooke, registering an effort of 26:37.  Rounding out the Emory scorers were senior Eddie Mulder (26:50, 57th), freshman Austin Hunt (27:15, 97th) and classmate Michael McBane (27:18, 98th).

The women’s side came in seventh out of 26 teams, recording 213 points.  Hope College was first with 91 points while Northwood (107 pts.) and Wingate (131 pts.) were second and third, respectively.  Junior Tamara Surtees was the team’s leading performer, posting a 5K time of 19:16.6 that was good for 22nd position out of 211 entries.  Senior Emily Caesar came through by crossing the finish line in 25th place with a showing of 19:17.  Junior Marissa Gogniat was the next Emory performer on the board, with her time of 19:32 ranking 40th in the field. Rounding out the team’s scorers were juniors Elise Viox (19:54, 67th) and Ashley Stumvoll (19:56, 69th).

There were Silver Division competitions held as well for those who did not race in the Blue meets, with the men’s team finishing ninth out of 38 teams and the women 11th out of 36.  Freshman Christian Johnson paced the Eagles’ pack in the men’s event with his 8k performance of 27:42 good for 39th place out of 320 runners.   Sophomore Lydia O’Neal was the No. 1 women’s runner in that competition, standing 31st out of 281 contestants.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they take part in the Oberlin Inter-Regionals.
